She walked down the yard, caught the longest train she seen
She walked down the yard, caught the longest train she seen
Said, she'd ride and ride "till the blues wear offa me"
It's two bullyin' freight trains runnin' side by side
It's two bullyin' freight trains runnin' side by side
They done stole my rider and I guess they's satisfied
They rode in the Delta, kept on easin' by
They rode in the Delta, kept on easin' by
Know I feel just like she said her last goodbye
Friend, she won't write, she won't telephone
Friend, she won't write, she won't telephone
Makes me believe to my soul rider calls that "gone"1
But if I had wings, friend, like Noah's dove
Friend, if I had wings, friend, like Noah's dove
I would raise and fly, God knows, where my lover was
I laid down at night, I can't sleep at all
I laid down at night, I can't sleep at all
Awful lyin' there wondering if someone rollin' in her arms
Laid my head on my pillow, friends, it be's too high
Laid my head on my pillow, friends, it be's too high
Taken down with, I'm gettin' sick and 'bout to die

I'm not sure you understand the song.  When he's talking about is escaping from a chain gang.

Love this Artist
damn that is FINE PICKIN  : )
Heard Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Will the Circle Be Unbroken album so many times while growing up that hearing the Take This Hammer lyrics here kinda threw me, then I read some stuff at Wikipedia. Lotta history for that song.

This takes me back to my first exposure to Taj Mahal (the album Oooh So Good 'n Blues, released in 1973).
Well now bring me my pistol
I said three round balls...
love Taj

I am not very happy with the vocals!{#Cry}
At first I thought this was another version of Hot Tuna's 99 Year Blues...it would be awesome if it segued into that song next!
I think I may have another Taj Mahal recording of this, but THIS is pure music at its most minimal and elegant best. Oh baby!
Great tune.. sounds good done by practically everyone

Taj Mahal is wonderful. And what a wonderful set to test software to:

Rolling Stones — Let It Bleed
Muddy Waters — I Can't Be Satisfied
Taj Mahal — Spike Driver Blues

And, one of the best silly software testing songs is:
May the bird of Paradise fly up your nose by Littly Jimmy Dickens
but I digress...

Digress away, now I'm going to have to search out that piece........a good thing, even if I don't like it.
Seeing as I don't usually listen to music as a system/devise tester ( quadraphonic/4 track tape /Nakamichi days are behind me}. perhaps it's time for a wake-up call.
Love the irony......'seeing as'
when discussing audio
This is wonderful.  May I also request some 1928 sessions Mississippi John Hurt?

Love the Taj!
VERY surprising how alike taj and greg brown sound on this.
This is pretty cool...Mark Knopfler's onetime "band" of buddies, The Notting Hillbillies, covered this as well...
This is a very groovy cover...  love these blues...
Love The Taj!

Awesome Taj!
Really digging this track. Nice to hear Taj so pared down and focused just on the picking and his voice. This also came as part of a darn solid blues set:

Rolling Stones — Let It Bleed
Muddy Waters — I Can't Be Satisfied
Taj Mahal — Spike Driver Blues

Nicely done
