The critic mind is here today
The same old thing as yesterday
In the shower, the yard and on the bike
It's cold as ice
Spoil the picnic, spoil the fun
Spoiling ad nauseam
In the universe the clouds are clear
And my baby's here
The sorry words I tell myself
(Spinning again, I'm spinning again)
The ancient thoughts of someone else
(Spinning again, I'm spinning again)
And once in a while
You turn up the dial
To an old tape playing in my head
To an old tape playing in my head
I'll tune it out and live instead
I'll tune it out and live instead
What did I find in a broken heart?
A pig, a dig and a faulty start
You're more gentle than I'll ever be
So be gentle with me
The sorry words I tell myself
(Spinning again, I'm spinning again)
The ancient thoughts of someone else
(Spinning again, I'm spinning again)
And once in a while
You turn up the dial
To an old tape playing in my head
To an old tape playing in my head
I'll tune it out and live instead
I'll tune it out and live instead
I'll tune it out and live instead

There is some War on Drugs hiding inside this tune… nice find.

It's an effect that's quite fashionable right now -- hard clipping followed by a notch filter or filters that's supposed to remove the harsh byproducts of said clipping. It's a way of getting the vocals to penetrate a dense mix, and to add a sense of "edginess". Often the amount applied will be increased during the chorus or hook on a song to make it jump out when the whole mix is already turned up to 11.
I freakin' hate it, in almost all settings. On moody dance or electro-pop, in small doses, it can be kinda cool. But it's often way overused. Like here.
Do the vocals seem fuzzy to anyone else?

Interesting, these ladies have a history of singing backup for Roger Waters on a few shows, and he did a duet with them on their acoustic compilation album.
