I heard a comedian say that the lyrics from the Talking Heads sounded like what a crazy homeless person yells on a streetcorner, and it's accurate.  That said, I think we should all listen to that crazy voice more often!

Yeah, this live album wasn't released until 1982 or '83.  The studio version of this song was on their first album: "77", which obviously was released in 1977.

The songs listed — and the supposed recording date — on this are confusing... A few, especially the first batch, seem about right for the period; the rest seem from later albums, and many are also found on the collection, Sand in the Vaseline...  In any case, for most of us, our first exposure to TH was the smash hit, "Take Me to the River" from More Songs about Buildings and Food, and the band's mass TV debut on SNL, in '78 I think it was. Those of us who were first experiencing the joys and freedoms of driving, car stereo tape decks (in this case, 8-track!), and killer weed knew there was something special and different about this wacky new band, and it wasn't just the singer. They were doing something truly astounding at the time: daring to turn the whole idea of Pop Music on its ear — and they pulled it off! We lapped it all up; we couldn't get enough of it. Forever after, they have kept us enamored and amused...

This song screams "listen to me" - not the best thing when you've tuned in for some background music to work to!

Still, I haven't heard it for so long, it's worth taking a minute to reflect on whether Talking Heads have stood the test of time or not. I can understand if someone hates this, but thank heaven for its middle eight. Turns the song from something Police-like repetitive into one that prompts a reaction along the lines of "how did they ever think they could get away with it?"

 

Now I can put this one back in the mental archive for another 5-10 years, and enjoy it again some time around 2020!

Wrong-o, Fred.  Contrary to your bad assumption, I actually don't have a problem with people writing disparaging comments about TH or any other musician for that matter.  What baffles me is the comment "Mute!" and the like.  Seems to be as just as pointless as "I'm going to get another cup of coffee."  Why not say what you don't like about the music instead of just telling everyone that you are silencing the station?

Then again, I suppose much of what is written on Internet comment boards is narcissistic to some degree, including this comment.

I never "got" the Talking Heads, but I defend others' rights to somehow enjoy them.  This got a 6 from me.  I didn't change the station (or hit the mute button) but I couldn't wait for it to finish.  Thankfully, TH songs are all around 3 minutes!

I like early Talking Heads.  Saw them at Clark University in Worcester, MA 1979.  David Byrne was very energetical, and sweated a lot, almost from the start of the show.
