How many times have you woken up and prayed for the rain?
How many times have you seen the papers apportion the blame?
Who gets to say, who gets to work and who gets to play?
I was always told at school, everybody should get the same

How many times have you been told if you don't ask you don't get?
How many times have you wasted your money your mother said you shouldn't bet
And who has the fun? Is it always a man with a gun?
Someone must have told you if you work too hard you can sweat

There's always the sun
Mmmm, there's always the sun
Always, always, always the sun

How many times has the government told you stories that made you laugh?
You know it's not up to the politicians and the leaders, when they do things by half
Who gets the job of pushing the knob?
That's what responsibility you draw straws for if you're mad enough

There's always the sun
Mmmm, there's always the sun
Always, always, always the sun

There's always the sun
Mmmm, there's always the sun
Always, always, always the sun

There's always the sun
There's always the sun
Always, always, always the sun

Always the sun
Always the sun

There's always the sun
Mmmm, there's always the sun
Always, always, always the sun

There's always the sun
There's always the sun
Always, always, always the sun

I've always loved how his voice, cadence, and stylings in this song remind me of great old Lou Reed...and that's awesome!
Hahahha - fucking haters, time wasting fools. The Stranglers are amazing!!! Now and forever..

There’s always this song!! Ugh!
Wait, this sounds different from how I remember it.
I heard the first notes and immediately rated a ‘9’, but as it played I realized it’s not the version I really love…

A song that really makes me appreciate the ability to stream in ultra and flac on RP.  Sounds just as fresh as when I first heard it nearly 40 years ago.
Actually I love this song, but not this version.
The version I remember was simpler and I would give a 8.
For this one only a 5.
Having been accustomed to the original version, I find the overdubbed guitar part really annoying. It seems to me incorrect to put mostly irrelevant fills, played in a smooth professional style, over the top of Cornwall's jaggedy naive style. For what purpose? Just to showcase the new dude? Give me the good old Stranglers any day.

You know, it repeats the way the sun does, every day, always.

RIP Dave Greenfield
A different recording than the one on the US album. But a good version.
It's odd, this song seems like it was done by  the Brady Bunch or Partridge  Family or the Cowsills.

"I'm gonna keep on, keep on, keep on...".

I was a kid when every radios played it... I getted the lyrics later... That rocks without getting old !
Sorry, what’s the name of this song?
droning a bit
Always the worst!

found this on Wikipedia:

Sunny Side Up Mix

Following HughCornwell's departure from the band in August 1990, Epic Records decided to release a greatest hits compilation album. To promote this compilation, a remix of "Always the Sun" was released as a single on 24 December 1990, Christmas Eve.  The remix consisted of extra guitar work from new guitarist John Ellis and a slight variation in the music, although Hugh Cornwell's original vocals were still used.

Like the original, the single got good airplay, but this time peaked at #29, one place higher than the original.  Cornwell stated in his book Song By Song that he was not angered by the remix, asserting that he was privileged that Epic Records thought "Always the Sun" was good enough to be re released, and feeling that the band changed little of the original recordings.

This sounds a lot like a re-recording. There are more guitar fills and supporting guitar work, the drums are bassier, the sound is cleaner and fuller, the ending is different, etc.

Which is cool. It's still a great song.

I pretty sure that the album was re-issued in 2001 and at that time it was remastered.  I'm guessing that this is the remastered version.

I agree, this version is good but very différent. We'd like to know why? Somebody knows?

Q: What is there always?
Wow. Not surprised you heathens miss the subliminal Christian message.

And if you listen very hard, the truth will come to you at last:
Exactly 666 refrains in, you can CLEARLY hear him sing, "There's always The Son."

BAM! You just got punked by The Stranglers' "Always The Son" — a favorite played (& played & played & played) in revival tents worldwide.

Bonus Feature on original album sleeve notes:

What is there always?
A: The Sun
B: The Son
C: Thus, son
D: This song
E: This On (and on, and on, and on, and on...)
there is always the truth . . .

Kind of "pop punk".

This is much more pop than punk. The Stranglers did do punk songs though, but that was before they did poppy songs like this. None of those punk songs are in the RP-playlist. They were quite good as punk as well as a pop band actually.
Has this song ever been out of regular rotation? (At least what passes for "regular" on RP.) It gets me going every time I hear it. Yay!
One of my favorite ear worms...
Kind of "pop punk". Don't fret over the repetitive verse - pop is like that, so when you have a catchy tune, maximise it. This particular mix isn't what I'm used to hearing on commercial radio, and it does overdo the repetition somewhat.
I liked this song until the relentless repeating of "there's always the sun" occurred...went from 7 - 3 before the song ended

Classic!  OMG 28 years ago!
Hugh and guys innovated in so many ways.  Artistically they really made you take notice. Way ahead of the crowd back then. Thanks RP for always surprising.
Lyric mistake:

How many times has the weatherman told you stories that made you laugh?

I believe the line as sung is:

How many times has the government told you stories that made you laugh?

Which would seem to make sense, in the context of the next line:

You know it's not up to the politicians and the leaders, when they do things by half
Nice! Hard to believe that this is the same band that gave us "Golden Brown"! This seems such a different style. I must like The Stranglers!
Thank you - not their best effort but I'll take it.  RP could really dig deeper into the Stranglers catalog for far better gems.  "Bring on the Nubiles!"
Great segue Bill {#Jump}!

This never fails to put me right back in that place, that time and there is always the sun.
Great segue,  Bill!      (from George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun")

That's one of the great things about RP, a real human DJ who knows his music!
Love the Stranglers but usually get stuck in the early period.  This sounds great as if I am hearing it for the first time.
Love it! Brings back wonderful memories. Thank you.

Just sent this to a TEN imho.

Far less dull than trying to debug code.
Keeping my spirits up on a dull Monday afternoon in the UK.
Boy...this is supremely dull. I do kinda like the chorus...but it certainly doesn't make up for the boring rest.

You are right, dont diss anything, just beause its "period" sound,,,,,Hey,,,its the way it was then :)

be happy all the time,,and I hope,,always with the sun :)

Love this!
I know this song is simple and many Stranglers fans probably hate it because it represents such a divergence from their earlier material (which I also like), but this song always makes me smile. Always loved it, always will. That's a 9, folks!

Haven't heard this in, gee, decades. Very '80s in a St. Elmo's Fire kind of way. But better. Lots of audio tricks. A bit repetitive but cool hooks. A lousy name for the band that no doubt did not roll off tongues.  The Strangers? The Stringers? The Spanglers?
Nice segue from a live version of "Here Comes the Sun"...
"The Stranglers".... is that an invitation?
I enjoyed this back in the day. The first 4-5 tracks were always non-skipable, especially this and Ghost Train.
