Let's write a story of a tidal wave
We run out of luck, we run out of days
We run out of gas a hundred miles away
From a station

There's a war and a plague, smoke and disaster
Lions in the coliseum, screams of laughter
Motherless children, a witness and a bible
Nothing but rain ahead and no chance for our survival

Just before the flood comes
Just before the night falls
Just before the blood runs
Into the valley
Just before my eyes go
Just before we can't go
No further
Love throws a line to you and me

I heard someone calling me from very far away
Sister, oh sister, did I hear them say?
Prisoner of this endless story of pain
You hold the key, try to find the way

Just before the flood comes
Just before the night falls
Just before the blood runs
Into the valley
Just before my eyes go
Just before it all blows
To pieces
We see love throw a line to you and me

Love throw a line
Love throw a line
Love throw a line
Love throw a line

Love, you better pick up your pace
If we're going to win this race
Love, we're running out of time
Pull yourself up from behind

Love throw a line
Love throw a line
Love throw a line
Love throw a line

i would put patty on stage with paul simon. because of her lyrical range and the fact that she is a hell of a guitar player. their vocal compatibility is a given, they combine the private with the  public, plus they would look cute together, sharing a secret "i'm so stoked," between songs, about how stunned the audience looked.

not to be forgotten,
with james mcmurtry i have put nancy griffith.
with nancy griffith i have put steve earle.
with steve earle i have put julie miller.
with julie miller i have put townes van zant
and with townes i have put patty griffin.

note to RP old timers — do we have a thread like this, fantasy football only with music ? dream concerts? etc. because i think we would fill that rascal up...

That sounds like lots of fun. I'd lose, though, because all of my picks would just be Patty Griffin with everyone all the time. Like the old Saturday Night Live sketch with the Chicagoans who match Dick Butkus against anyone.

i love patty very much. i love paul very much. unfortunately, that's where we stop meeting in agreement, here. i don't find their vocal "compatibility" a given at all. i don't think i'd like them together at all. but, sure, they'd look cute together...

unfortunately, as for the others you've matched - i'm not a big fan of any of those aside from townes.

however, if you haven't, i'd agree that it would be a fun thread to have on the chat comment forum. if you're still around, you should make this thread, i bet you'd get a lot of people to chime in.
This is Best song from PG!

A timely message indeed.  Thank you Patty.
Patty griffin another hidden treasure I discovered on RP, COMMERCIAL RADIO SUCKS
"There's a war and a plague, smoke and disaster

And Gawd almighty don't it probably feel like that if you're living out West these days?
Or in hurricane assaulted coastal areas?
These are days of dazed confusion.
The flood has come. only not quite as predicted.
Fires blot out the night.
Some scream for water; and others wish for less of it.
Blood it runs everywhere.
The future has come in like the leading edge of a tsunami.
It will not be denied, as it sweeps aside all that we know and love.
We certainly need a life line.
But there's not a one to be found.
except in this.
We're all on our own folks, and it's only in working together
that we can craft a line that saves all our sorry asses
from becoming victims to all that we have done.

Funny....I was hearing touches of a  couple of female country artists.
There probably are others but, this artist, adds JUST the right amnt of country to her style so that it sounds "meant to be"!!

Maine. But to me she sounds southernish somehow.  Go figure.

Bonnie is a bit more bluesy the Patty.  Both great ginger singers, though I bet it Bonnie didn't color she would be white now.{#Mrgreen}

can't wait to hear her new album.   i know i can count on bill to be spinnin' it!
If you like this style, you may want to check out Ollabelle. One of the singers is Levon Helm's daughter Amy, and she's fantastic!
A young Bonnie Raitt!
Always a pleasure to hear Patty...she is great live if you get a chance.
I can't seem to get enough of Patty. Thanks BillG!

Yummy...
Why constain ourselves with "simple genre labels"?
Physicsgenius: At last there is SOMETHING you like? A quote of Adams "The hitch hikers guide to the galaxy? If that belongs to the 10% non crap, I'm at least partially with you. 42 is the answer, just 42. Now what was the question?
I love this "end of the world" set. Bill needs to add Steely Dan's "King of the World" to it.
MOR Pap!
Patty Griffin achieves her evocative goal. She is the apotheosis of Patty Griffinhood. Let her rave on.

Some artists, like Patty Griffin and Lucinda Williams, are too talented to be confined by simple genre labels.

The country music pretenders up against the wall of pretenders. I like the concept.

I have to agree. I love PG, and I'm always hoping she'll write some songs that are a bit more hopeful. This one fits the bill, but I think it's a bit much.

Great segue out of Talking Heads "Nothing but Flowers".
One hugely talented artist. More PG, please.
I am a HUGE Patty fan, but this is not one of my favorites. Don't get me wrong, I like it, and it is a fun song when sung live, but there are others that I appreciate more. She's the best, most consistent songwriter today. The songs off Impossible Dream that I like more are: Kite Rowing Song Don't Come Easy Florida (a masterpiece)

me three!
When PG turns it up, I can't help but to sing along.
I realize this makes me sound like a ding dong, but this is a song I just want to *snap* along to. I'm a relatively new Patty fan -- like this song a lot. Outstanding variety Bill, as usual!

Radar Love?
Love this one more each time I hear it. Oops! I see I posted the exact same comment two months ago. Oh well, at least I'm consistant, if not original. :)
Oooh, that wonderful bassline makes me happy.
This one has a great gospel feel to it. I have yet to hear a Patty Griffin song that I don't love. This song is a bit misplaced on Impossible Dream, I think - it's the only real upbeat song on the disc.

I tried to upload this but they already had it!
Glad to hear her getting more exposure. They play her on a couple of the local FM stations here, but I don't know if she gets other AAA type exposure. She really has a great voice and wonderful songwriting talent. Glad to hear her any and all of her stuff. Have loved all of it.

did you submit this one kelli? it's really good! will hafta venture out and make a PG purchase...which CD should I start with?
All of them! Okay, seriously: different fans will tell you different things. I'd say start with her first, Living with Ghosts If you like live albums, A Kiss in Time would give you a pretty good sampling of songs. But really, you won't go wrong with any of them.

I agree completely. This is middle-of-the-road hot stuff, but hot stuff nontheless. Patti's talent is carrying the material here.
Few sing with such urgency.

A great song I play this song over and over in my car!!! Godlike is an understatement.
Love. Love. Love Patty.
