Made his great-grandchildren believe you could live to 103
103 is forever when you're just a little kid
So, Cyrus Jones lived forever
Gravedigger, when you dig my grave,
Could you make it shallow,
So that I can feel the rain?
Gravedigger...
Muriel Stonewall, 1903 to 1954
She lost both of her babies in the second great war.
Now, you should never have to watch
As your own children are lowered in the ground,
No, you should never have to bury your own babies
Gravedigger, when you dig my grave,
Could you make it shallow,
So that I can feel the rain?
Gravedigger...
Ring around the rosey
Pocket full of posey
Ashes to ashes
We all fall down
Gravedigger, when you dig my grave,
Could you make it shallow,
So that I can feel the rain?
Gravedigger...
Little Mikey Carson, '67 to '75
He rode his bike like the devil until the day he died
When he grows up he wants to be
Mr. Vertigo on the flying trapeze
Oh, 1940 to 1992
Gravedigger, when you dig my grave,
Could you make it shallow,
So that I can feel the rain?
Gravedigger, when you dig my grave,
Could you make it shallow,
So that I can feel the rain,
I can feel the rain, I can feel the rain?
Gravedigger, when you dig my grave,
Could you make it shallow,
So that I can feel the rain?

Gravedigger...
The musicianship Dave Matthews brings is often stellar. I love Carter Beauford's drumming, the guitar work, the musical composition. Sometimes the lyrics are interesting...
And then he goes: "... Ring around the rosy..."
This kind of shit takes it to a childish level. So now I understand why 20% of RP listeners rate this song 3 or less. For me it is un-rateable.
A Ring of Roses - Ring a Rosey, refers to the red rash that appeared before you died of the Bubonic plague (black Death), Just another way to die and need a grave

I kind of agree. Really liked the song up until that point. I still like the song. I also think this is still better than most of his other stuff.

Shamir's Lived and Died then Dave Matthew's Gravedigger made me hold my breath for a moment...
We all gotta love each other... at least be kind.
When i'll grow up, i'll want to have... Dave Matthews talent !

Death isn't cruel, just terribly good at his job
The figure of DEATH in Terry Pratchett's Discworld is a quiet and kindly figure. He even appears for non-human creatures.

Fantastic show despite my standing in the mosh pit for the 2 hours or so.
We find the power with music like this...
This is rather painful.
was thinking that about your comment
Don't?
or his next one?

Hahaha---opposite. This is about the only DM song that I get into.
I've seen them many times over the past couple of decades, and it is unbelievable to me that the band just seems to get better and better at live shows the longer they play.
I really feel sorry for folks who are sure to trash Dave and my post. Listening to live music is one of the greatest joys in life and Dave is at the top of the heap in terms of a jamming show. 3.5 hours (4 hours with intermission) of raw excitement, community, energy and the love of music.
I'm glad you enjoy their music and their shows, but I do not and don't need your pity because of it. I don't care for their music (which is not trashing Dave, his band or your post), but it's great that others do. Cheers

The Carpenters' original version of this tune is much more melodic.

Oh, well, actually, "Don't Drink the Water" is better, but that's it.
You're right ! And I rated it a "1" and muted.

Yup, the redheaded stranger does this song justice. Have you seen the video? Very dark, and Willie plays all the parts.
The live album with Tim Reynolds is stunning. (Or horrible, if you're a hater)
The matching DVD adds a lot to the performance.

"Grave Digger" is one of his best songs and it's appalling to me that we can't even rate it a 6 here because of some of the crumdgeons who have an outright hatred for DMB. Regardless, he isn't struggling and still sells out concerts throughout the world while surviving on longevity that few other bands in the modern era possess. You rating this a 3 in some sort of alternate universe of musical snobbery doesn't change the fact that Dave and company will be long remembered for their musical talents heading into the 21st century.
I'm with you. There seems to be a club of low raters for this guy. I saw him once, and play his live DVD often. The band rocks and nobody can ever convince me they don't. Ignore them, listen to what you like and enjoy it regardless of the haters.
Overall 5.5...man, this is NOT fair at ALL, I'd say, and I' m NOT a Matthews fan by any means. 34 "1" Suck o Barfos,..are these supposed to be non biased opinions, come on guys,...
Then prepare to be amazed. 'Cause I've never been able to stand Dave Matthews. In any time, shape or form. I utterly fail to see what there is to like about this guy's music.
Of all the music that I hear on RP, ONLY Dave Matthews gets my unadulterated low ratings. Very nearly EVERYTHING ELSE I hear I enjoy in at least some respects.
But Dave Matthews gets all Sucko-Barfos. He's way overrated ... 'cuase he just sucks.
Exactly what I was talking about, are we rating the song or the band themselves? As stupid of a comment eight years ago as it is today.....

This is an awesome song....what the heck is wrong with it, other than the fact that most of you for some reason "hate Dave Matthews"?
Willie Nelson covered it, and wow did he do a great version.
I suspect that if it was played on RP, it would get a significantly higher rating, since I think less people "hate Willie Nelson".
Totally agree with you on this one. I'm one of these don't like Dave Matthews band people, but this is a really good song and other than the vocalist does not have that "DMB" sound that I don't like.
Agreed. This song is a dark and haunting journey through the cemetery and our depressed souls.
Boston on your mind?

Hmmm, we could use some Corb Lund around here, methinks.
