The fallacies of morning rose
Forbidden fruit, hidden eyes
Courtesies that I despise in me
Take a ride, take a shot now
Cause nobody loves me, it's true
Not like you do
Covered by the blind belief
That fantasies of sinful screens
Bear the facts, assume the dye
End the vows no need to lie, enjoy
Take a ride, take a shot now
Cause nobody loves me, it's true
Not like you do
Who am I, what and why
Cause all I have left is my memories of yesterday
Ohh these sour times
Cause nobody loves me, it's true
Not like you do
After time, the bitter taste
Of innocence, descent or race
Scattered seeds, buried lives
Mysteries of our disguise revolve
Circumstance will decide
Cause nobody loves me, it's true
Not like you
Nobody loves me, it's true
Not like you do
Mary Jane Lamond is the vocalist. A Montrealer who relocated to Nova Scotia (Cape Breton) and embraced Gaelic folk songs. She deserves a co-credit here.
"She deserves a co-credit here. Yes I thought the same .
one of 2 portishead songs i actually like. this is pretty groovy.
Thanks for that! Here's an example of a Cimbalom being played on YouTube:
Cimbalom (dulcimer) solo played by Jeno Farkas, Szalai Hungarian Gypsy Band
Thank You for the info!
It's apparently a cimbalom, which is more-or-less an Eastern European type of hammered dulcimer. (Wikipedia link for Cimbalom) The sample is from a Lalo Schifrin piece for "Mission: Impossible".

A review of this song elsewhere on the web said that all 11 tracks on this album would be suitable for Bond films.
Worth repeating:

I can hear an early James Bond sound in this tune! GREAT TUNE!! Thanx RP!
Anyone else think of Bond when you hear this? Great song but I have visions of women in bikinis pointing guns at targets off screen.
Uses a sample from Mission Impossible music from the 60s; so very much intentional I think (but the spy involved has an American accent).
Thanx for the info! Great tune!

I hear James Bond too!! GREAT TUNE!!

That works so well!
When Trip-Hop was on charts, radios and TVs...
Am I getting old?!
Yes I am and it's not a bad thing
Anyway, 10

There were some very good pubs & live music venues?
I was there, but I strongly suspect that my presence was not the cause of the musical creativity.
It was just gurt lush.
I like songs that feature (what sounds like) a telephone button tone (the 7 button?) and heavy on good drum beats, yup...that does it for me ;-) 8 rate!

(Android cache, has always done this)
What was is about the Bristol area in the nineties?
Skipped for me about 40% of way into song just now. Then finished fine with no gap to next song. Using iPhone cache
Roger that.
Most of us have been given the gift of hearing. Let's not abuse it!
An STD...or a musician's holiday.
But there are 348 good souls (as of 2011) who probably beg to differ. It's all happening in Clapton-in-Gordano!
The church is very old, The Black Horse Pub looks quite nice, and Whizz the lifesaving dog is more interesting than David Hasselhoff.
Yes, that really is Hassi, who loves C-in-G. Whizz was hoping for Pamela Anderson, but what can you do...

I vaguely remember that program. I believe the main sample used in this tune is from incidental music for an episode of "Mission: Impossible", composed by Lalo Schifrin.
So totally agree
Good - sure. Still I prefer the TROGGS "Wild Thing" now...
I assume it's easy to understand why - is it not?
GREAT!

I believe it's a cimbalom - which is a 'concert' hammered dulcimer.
(Oh, someone mentioned that several posts below.)

Damn, I thought that was my little guilty secret......
she smokes during their concerts
"Do you smoke after sex?"
"I don't know, I've never looked."
Do I hear a hammered dulcimer?

1994? No - can't be! It was only a couple of years ago surely?
RJD2 - Smoke & Mirrors
Massive Attack - Protection
RP's trad rad trip-hop trio.
Yes indeed! I have always LOVED this song since it came out, but hearing it paired with RJD2 is double the pleasure! We did not get Massive Attack with it today....
I have to agree. They have a unique sound and style. Very original. This whole album is brilliant. One of the best of the late 20th Century.
By the way, the sample here is, in fact from Lalo Schifrin's score for the American TV series "Mission: Impossible" (1966-73). The track called "Danube Incident" — excellent, moody track — when the sampled bit comes in at the end, it's like WHA?!
(More Wiki goodness: The jangly sample in "Sour Times" is a cimbalom, a form of hammered dulcimer from Central and Eastern Europe.)
Yea, this is a good'n.
Totally agree. Not that that is a bad thing.

Good luck with that.
