A day once dawned,
As sleepers yawned
A day of leaves so green-i-o
That a man rode high
In the tinker's sky
And begged me to go running-o
And follow the path of the Gypsy-o
Seaweed clings to ruby rings
On the fingers of my lady-o
And the people in the town
They would not look round
To see me go running-o
On the trail of the Enchanted Gypsy-o
I passed the glade
And took near shade
Beneath an oak so twisty-o
And a vision I saw
As the crow did craw
No more did I go searching-o
One the trail of the Enchanted Gypsy-o
Seaweed clings to ruby rings
On the fingers of my lady-o
And the people in the town
They would not look round
To see me go running-o
On the trail of the Enchanted Gypsy-o
His caravan
Was painted by hand
That's touched every pebble in the ocean-o
And the pictures there
They move in thin air
There forever telling-o
The tails of the Enchanted Gypsy-o
Seaweed clings to ruby rings
On the fingers of my lady-o
And the people in the town
They would not look round
To see me go running-o
For to follow the path of the Gypsy-o

Bongos?!?! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! (I had a pair, so also laughing at myself!)

I thought it was hilarious!

I count myself blessed well enough to have had this among my LP collection, and one particular summer day of 1986 or was it 7 myself and co-workers Kenny and Alison drove up to Beaver Lake along the Peak to Peak Highway and ate oodles of shrooms and Alison was wearing a tie-dyed lacy skirt and the stereo of my Chevy played the cassette I had of this and she danced for us, Gypsy style, and the colors of the sky and the lake and the lichen on the granite and the pulse of the music and the oneness of everything captured our All...

Hadn't heard this one before. More Donovan please.
I count myself truly blessed to have had this among my LP collection! One magical summer day in '86 I took my shroom-mates Alison and Kenny up to Beaver Lake along the Peak to Peak Highway in my '61 Impala and we ate oodles of shrooms and Alison was wearing a tie-dyed T-shirt and a lacy white skirt and all the while I played the cassette I'd just made of this and when we got out to hike she danced for us, Gypsy-style, and the colors of the sky and the lake and the lichen on the granite and the pulse of the music and the oneness of everything captured and enriched All...
First time this has been played in almost 10 years - would be nice to have more Donovan played here.

If Donovan is still performing (and I don't believe he is) he'd be well justified in doing this song, because it's a worthy piece of British folk-fantasy music.
I'm guessing, however, that if he performed it today he would change his use of the bongo and flute. He's attempting to meld musical styles from different eras here, and nowadays his use of the bongos and flute in this piece lock it inescapably into a '60's prison. The piece today sounds horribly dated, and I think at the time he recorded it he was shooting for timeless.
Some songs really don\'t date do they
Donovan may be cool, but this is the kind of song that gives 60's folk music a bad name. Let's leave the 60's era interpretations of trad. British music to those who did it best, Fairport Convention, Pentangle and Steeleye. Span
Donovan is cool......thanks.
This song had a time and that time has passed us by IMO...
