I think Trump trades on the fact that his opponents use a different yardstick to measure him on than the one used by his voter base.

Things like reason, fairness, equity and so on, long-standing relationships of trust and mutual respect (take that Canada!) - none of these things appear on his moral compass.

It is easy to write him off as an infantile truant, but his agenda might be far more nefarious: he is buying domestic popularity by running up a huge government deficit to secure his home base, then by ridiculing the values on which western society is based he undermines the moral authority shoring up most other democracies, paving the way for xenophobic governments to be installed elsewhere, parties that renege on multilateral deals (Brexit for example). This is exactly the same agenda btw as Putin who would love to see the EU dismantled. Then once you have broken down your opposition into manageable bits you can dominate the playing field just by sheer size.
