Bands sitting around jamming might be greatly entertaining to themselves (I can see them smiling and laughing at someone finding a nice new improved riff) but to the audience, it is like being left out of some really great in-joke that only the band can enjoy (because you had to be there all those thousands of times they were playing this to understand why such and such flute is so damn great.) Jamming is often just an excuse to wander aimlessly in musical space without really doing anything.

This song, for example, is not particularly coherent— the mood is all over the place, the theme is sloppy, lyrically it is pretty bland, and the music doesn't flow particularly smoothly or sensically from one bit to another.

I hope this is a thoughtful enough criticism. Sometimes it is hard to pinpoint why something stinks, but it is useful to attempt it.

and again from Neko Case to DMB... i'm definitely not complaining, but this song makes me want to abandon all schoolwork and smoke a cigarette in a dimly lit club. love it

What a deflate from Neko Case.  This is from the period where Dave Matthews Band got windy, slow, cumbersome, and boring.  They sound like they are just jamming, and that is not usually a good thing.   Bands sitting around jamming might be greatly entertaining to themselves (I can see them smiling and laughing at someone finding a nice new improved riff) but to the audience, it is like being left out of some really great in-joke that only the band can enjoy (because you had to be there all those thousands of times they were playing this to understand why such and such flute is so damn great.)  Jamming is often just an excuse to wander aimlessly in musical space without really doing anything.

a very special song for my hubby and i. lots of fond memories here. ^_^ also, i think this is one of the best-written songs of the 90s. as someone said earlier, DMB has stumbled (particularly of late) but their early work was extremely creative and solid. i love this album.

Yeah, it's because it's Dave Matthews. Are you happy now. The guy sucks. His music sucks. It didn't always suck. His first two albums were great. I used to listen to him all the time. But then something went wrong. He sucked. And still does. But Bill has to play some shitty music and here it is ! There. You asked. As my old boss would say "Are you happy now?"

My favorite album of theirs, from just before the period when they turned downhill for me. I love this tune (LeRoi hooks me on with the flute towards the end), but every time I hear it, I remember what an old roommate said when he first heard it (the instrumental at the end): "Rich, are you watching porn over there or something?"

Ditto!! I got into DMB right before Crash came out and got to see them just before they got all cool and hip. This album was a real mixed bag, on the other hand. There are people who SLAM them for all sorts of reasons but they can play as good as anyone and have written some fine tunes-including this one. In the late 1990s, with all the crap music out there, here came a dude playing an acoustic guitar with a violinst in his band and a kick-ass rhythm section...they deserve respect for that. Undoubtedly they have since stumbled but, like them or not, saying they suck is just plain incorect.

Sorta like pizza music for me. Enjoy it while you're listening to it, but it's hard to remember the experience a few days later. It is what it is. Not life-changing...and if you're of a certain age you likely remember sitting in your dorm room thinking "music doesn't get any better than this". Fortunately I've learned, 'yes, it does'. 6

Wow - there's some serious DMB haters out there. I was blown away when they first came out, then eventually tired of them (around the time of this album. Bought it the day it came out, listened to it once). BUT, there is definitely a degree of complexity and musicianship as well as lyrical intricacy to DMB music that you don't get with a lot of other music (even some here on RP - not that there's anything wrong with that). I still respect them, but I don't think I'll be shelling out $80 to go hang out at next summer's tour. They had their era - the revival of the jam band (ugh) (see Phish, Blues Traveller, etc.). I think everyone goes through a DMB phase...(click here)

I saw DMB live after his second album. It was an awesome show. But he has drifted off the edge of the waters. His music lacks that originality that he once had. My brother burned this for me to listen to. I actually ejected the cd and heaved it out the window of my car. It really wasn't worth my time. I later picked up over 5 bags of garbage along the roadsides in my neighborhood to redeem myself from polluting the NY state thruway of one errant cd. Isn't guilt wonderful?!!

I agreed with you up until the Hootie thing. . . that was harsh. But the rest is perfectly accurate, with one exception - I think the song "Crash" (or possibly "Crash Into Me"?) is insanely sexy and I adore it. Beyond that, nothing he's done is very interesting or memorable to me.

DMB and Hootie in the same camp? Not even close, sorry. You're entitled to your opinion, but the fact is that when it comes to musical complexity, there's absolutely no comparison between the two. DMB's music has a lyricism that is utterly lacking in the one-hit-wonder music of Hootie.

Seems a good day for fine but relatively underplayed cuts from some big names. Portends more of Bills's fine work at updating the play list. Earlier I was commenting on a cut from Pearl Jam. Well the same goes for this cut from Dave Mathews. Fine cut Dave !!! (and yes, that is an especially fine instrumental riff at the end.) And fine work Bill !!!

This album may be DMB's finest work, and this song has the coolest bass line. Every song is artfully written and beautifully done. I think this album contains some of Dave's finest writing (Dreaming Tree, Spoon, Dont' Drink the Water, Halloween, Pig). I can put this CD on at any time and I never get tired of it, and I have listened to it a million times. Amazing stuff.
