I'm so sure this is a riff on The Smiths' Cemetry Gates. Also love the build and layering of more backing every time we come back to the "merry go round" line in the chorus ...

I've given it a couple of tries now, and i generally like these guys, but there's something about the melodic structure of the chorus that just grates on me. Can't really explain why. I won't drag down the rating average, but skipping from now on.
I think of the Decemberists as The Smiths for the 21st century - all mopey. (Not that that's a bad thing. I like much of their material.) Adding James Mercer's voice brings a little light to their work. And yes, I'm a big fan of the Shins.
