Sorry, and I may get flack - but why would I listen to this over The Beach Boys?
Why not both? And anything and everything else you like
Who says you have to limit what you get enjoy?

The Beach Boys are commies! Contract malaria with the rest of us!
I keep hearing snatches of Sloop John B:
I feel so broke up
I wanna go home
Same! Immediately thought it was Sloop John B and I just hadn't noticed where we were in it yet

Same. I heard beach boys and thought of sjb but thought I may be losing it.

So true
I recommend seeing them live. I was really surprised at what a good showman Colin was--and they were all great!
I second that. Saw them for the first time on Saturday night and they were excellent.
Ah is that why I keep hearing Sloop John B?
The James Mercer influence is palpable here. He is so good at crafting those little lyrical pop hooks. The weak part of the song for me is the pitch on the trumpet fill. But still a 7-8 for me.
I think it's cool that The Decemberists gave us a rock song that contains a trumpet fill! Not a lot of bands can pull that off, or would even think of doing so.
an very well-crafted song but for some reason I have limited tolerance for Colin Meloy's perpetually straining tinny voice. there are a lot of frontmen in rock who make up for a questionable instrument with charismatic delivery but he just doesn't get there for me unfortunately.

That's a relief, I thought it was my imagination - and yes, Sloop John B !
I feel so broke up
I wanna go home
"They've undid the aerial
Tore down the merry-go-round"
should be followed by
"The grammar's all wrong"

Melody. Different arrangements. Vocals. Less wonder, "what the f is he singing about?"
