But you might be big in Japan.
I'd be the moon, I'd be the cheese. I'd have the whole damn nation on it's knees.
Tom Waits is one of those artists that ages like wine. He's a little rough on the palette when you first encounter him, but if you let the taste develop, the experience deepens and grows richer. This particular song became very important to me when my father was dying, as the lyrics kind of perfectly captured the way he'd lived his life and left it - long, meandering, ultimately rich and leaving a light for others to follow.

Don't forget you would still need a phenomenal gift for melody, extremely clever lyrics, superb musicianship, and unique arrangements. And even with all that, you probably still wouldn't make it big.
But you might be big in Japan.
Tom Waits was good in The Outsiders and very compelling in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Sure thing, Jan. Meanwhile, at least 2 people have verbally spanked you, so keep up. One day you might actually hit half a wit.

man, if I knew you could be a successful singer with a crappy voice, I could have made it BIG!

First you write the lyrics and they tell the story. Then you place the lryics with Music notes. Then you smoke and drink and sing just like Tom Waits.
Easy. Everyone can sing like Tom Waits. (and Bob Dylan). Pass go and collect your money.
