breathing in the dark
lying on its side
the ruins of the day
painted with a scar
and the more I straighten out
the less it wants to try
the feelings start to rot
one wink at a time
oh
forgiving who you are
for what you stand to gain
just know that if you hide
it doesn’t go away
when you get out of bed
don’t end up stranded
horrified with each stone
on the stage
my little dark age
picking through the cards
knowing what’s nearby
the carvings on the face
say they find it hard
and the engine’s failed again
all limits of disguise
the humor’s not the same
coming from denial
oh
I grieve in stereo
the stereo sounds strange
I know that if you hide
it doesn’t go away
if you get out of bed
and find me standing all alone
open-eyed
burn the page
my little dark age
I grieve in stereo
the stereo sounds strange
you know that if it hides
it doesn’t go away
if I get out of bed
you’ll see me standing all alone
horrified
on the stage
my little dark age
giddy with delight
seeing what’s to come
the image of the dead
dead ends in my mind
policemen swear to god
love’s seeping from the guns
I know my friends and I
would probably turn and run
if you get out of bed
come find us heading for the bridge
bring a stone
all the rage
my little dark age
I grieve in stereo
the stereo sounds strange
I know that if you hide
it doesn’t go away
if you get out of bed
and find me standing all alone
open-eyed
burn the page

This song deserves a bit more love, I think. Takes me back to 1983 (even if it doesn't go that far back).
THE. HUMANS. ARE. DEAD.

Wonder if they're big in japan?
This is great. It reminds me a lot of Icehouse or Flock of Seagulls.
ETA: Bill must've heard me - second track after this was Icehouse, Great Southern land :D

Weed Music! @ its OK!
I dont want this song to stop!
Love the lyrics in the chorus and how they change subtley each time to flex the meaning
7 -> 8

Good song -- but it definitely sounds like a song that was built around the chorus and they had figure out sets of verses and bridges for it.
out of my range :)
What is this song about? I'm not bothering with the video since that has been repeatedly panned.
Good tune! I never heard of them before, Thanks RP!
I love this tune and appreciate all its quirks - it is mgmt after all. It reminds me a bit of Gary Numan.
I don't mind the 80's synth in this, but the vocal layering effect kinda makes me clench my jaw...seems wholly unnecessary....
I was kinda disappointed with the rest of the album though.

Not sure why someone voted down this comment, maybe if you'd said "monotone" instead of "tuneless"?

Thank you RP
I was going to say that this stuff ages badly, and then I saw it was put out in 2018, LOL.

Thought I was listening to the Pet Shop Boys. And that was not intended as a compliment.

MGMT hasn't put out a bad album imho.
I could not over endorse this track!
It has all the glory I seek
Thanks

The video really ruins the song for me. The music is decent '80's reminiscent, but the Video is like amatuer art school schlock. And yes, I know the 80's video stuff wasn't great, but one doesn't need to replicate failures. This is strange, isn't it? Reminiscent of 1980s' dark, obscure music. Was suprised to see the release date. Thanks Bill, don't think I'd have come across them without RP.
Watch the video on youtube. It's the new generation of emos;) Jelani wrote:

I could have sworn this was an 80's tune....completely fooled me

Thought I was about to hear the original It's all Over Now, Baby Blue.
Shades of Peter Gabriel's Games Without Frontiers?

There are other songs by this band. Why only this one?

very smooth and pleasant
Sorry, gotta give this a 3.
Everything new sounds old again--I LOVE IT! Long live the (new) 80s!

I need to listen to that more often. Alt Nation plays their more well-known songs. And I agree with bitbanger (who commented below) that this sounds very 80s.
Damn, even the video has an 80s vibe!
MGMT is on SiriusXMU quite a bit

Sounds very 80s for something released in 2018. Heard it before and wasn’t that interesting back then either. Going with a 3 and a big yawn!

Dang, this is MGMT?
ETA: I listen to Alt Nation on SiriusXM a lot, and they have NEVER played this. Haha, maybe Jim Ladd will play it on his show on Deep Tracks someday. (He probably won't, but he does play Porcupine Tree a lot!)

Nice. Love it when we get a nice run of boppy danceable tunage. MUCH needed in these unsettling times.
Should be followed by New Dark Age, by The Sound.

Exactly.
Good stuff.
A perfect 80s synth tune with modern production values.
I could go for a whole set of that sort of thing right now.
