Going for broke in a film noir smile
Know it's hard to your easy start
You don't let the clicks or injustice get you down
There's more to find than what you pick up
Sometimes the furthest isn't quite enough
Shadows are good companions for the lot that you say
The world's deserted and down
Like there's no love around
The river of life cuts across
Hearts no longer entwine
Words shine on like precious stones
Judgment day, the truth be known
The miles and years make it better
Through gilded tears
Race around to the rattling drone
Diamonds in the distance make the battle sound
Equilibrium found on the outskirts of any town
The world's deserted and down
Like there's no love around
The river of life cuts across
Hearts no longer entwine
Words shine on like precious stones
Judgment day, the truth be known
The miles and years make it better
Through gilded tears

I can just speak for myself. Son Volt is one of my favorites! I love everything about them. Jay’s vocals, the lyrics and the band- especially the steel guitar! “Shine On” is just one of many, many wonderful songs. Long live Son Volt

Nope. 'Fraid not.
I hear Bruces Cockburn and Springsteen in this. Nice tune.
I think it's the echoing guitar affect that's turning people off. It's not winning me over either.
Totally under rated I give this a 7 plus or better!
2 - Marginal is a generous rating for this.
My (unsolicited) advice would be for this artist to unlearn everything from those songwriting classes and find their own voice.

Just did my part with a 10, which it's not but neither is it a 5.7. Had to boost it, always loved that Son Volt, Wilco, Farrar end of things.
I have to agree. I saw Farrar in a basement venue in Cardiff, Wales, back in about 2005/6, and he was mesmerising. His band was also superb. Such a unique sound, and 'Barstow' was a particular highlight.

This band and this sound are fantastic, I do not understand a 5.7 average either. How unfortunate.

I imagine that tour all the time. So many great, great songs that may never, ever be played again. Pity. Have you ever considered, though, how odd it would be, since Wilco are bigger than Uncle Tupelo? Tweedy in large clubs - his head might be too big for that...
First off... I'm not so sure Wilco is bigger than Uncle Tupelo (or certainly what Uncle Tupelo could have been). Secondly, I don't really see Tweedy as a swollen headed kind of guy. I saw Wilco in a small theatre just a few months ago. Tupelo would be perfect for theater and club gigs.
He and Jay ARE on speaking terms. Jay's sound being closer to Uncle Tupelo now than Jeff, I think it would take Jeff being really interested in the idea to make it work. We can hope and dream, though.

Just my take on it... I find this just fine, but been there done that. Can't say there's anything wrong with it except it doesn't feel original - it sounds like a dozen other artists I've heard many times over.

Wonder if he gets back there...to drink Stag Beer.
I like Son Volt, a lot, and I've seen them many times in various incarnations over the years. Jay Farrar is only 46, but his soul is 96. Wise but weary.

Not to be critical, but this song sucks the part of a donkey directly under the belly.
Well, I like it.

I'm betting on the answer being YES.

Shot of V.O. and a Budweiser please.
Sounds like it could be a decent song, but that guitar effect is awful.
Ghastly.
Refreshingly great lyrics ahh to sink the teeth into
MAKE IT STOP!!!

We need some kind of Uncle Tupelo renion for one summer tour...
Just to remind folks what great music there was was for a brief period in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Not awful, but it seems like Sun Volt has seen it's best days already.
Can't help thinking if people were told it was Bruce Springstein singing they'd say how lovely and thoughtful Shine On was :)

Yes, Jay Farrar should be claimed by the Heavenly Band any day now, having achieved the ancient age of 46. Here's a station you may like. That's the kind of song that makes me go change my radio listening experience. As much as I love RP, songs like this remind me it's an old men's radio station. I agree with the Nottingham jury

Moaning, whingeing twaddle
B l a n d....at it's very best.
The Ho-Hum's Ho-Hum. Dullsville from the word go. It would help if yer man used a range of more than, ooh I dunno, 3 notes in the song. 3 from the somnolent Nottingham jury
Always like the sound of Son Volt.....!

Yes - I listened carefully and it is too high. I gave it a 2. It is just so formulaic.
