You keep my secrets
And I keep none
Wish I could go back
And keep some

It's fireproof
Nothing breaks your heart
It's fireproof
It's just the way you are

You tell me you're waiting
To find someone
Who isn't so hopeless
But there's no one

You're fireproof
Nothing breaks your heart
You're fireproof
How'd you get so far

From where you're headed
To the water I will go
You're a million miles away
Doesn't matter anymore

Jennifer you are not the only reason
My head is boiling and my hands are freezing
Jennifer you are not the only one
That sit awake until the wild feelings leave

Nothing breaks your heart
It's fireproof
It's just the way you are
You're fireproof

That's what you always say
You're fireproof
I wish was that way

Fantastic band.  Lucky enough to have seen them live on three occasions.
Songwriting is just so good.
A good song, but a disturbingly misogynistic album cover.
Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead collaborated with The National.

Sweet song.  I do enjoy several of The National songs but much of the other material takes on a certain sameness.  That would explain the 'haters'.

If I liked everything that RP played, I would stop listening.

In the meantime, shush.  Let others enjoy.

The National seems to bring them out, and several other artists.
Sure, there's music i don't like on RP, but you can't "hate" music. good grief the hate can be strong.

I'd like to think they are trolling, because the alternative is that they are actually getting that worked up.  and that's definitely not good, for them or the rest of us.

Let them eat cake!

I wish I could upvote this comment more than once.  Oh well.

I discovered The National on RP.  Took my wife to their fantastic show at The Greek in Berkeley just before the pandemic.  In the beer line she ran into one of the young tech bros at a company where she serves on the board.  She said he gave her a double take, as if to say, "Wow, wouldn't guess I'd see you here."  She thanked me profusely.
In general, you may have fireproof and carcinogenic, or flammable and non-carcinogenic. Choose carefully.

The poor guy on the right is thinking this:
I'm feeling old.  My 28-year-old daughter flew to Vancouver to attend a National concert last summer, and I sat on my ass at home listening to them on RP and feeling envious.

No! You do!  See how creative my response is to your simplistic comment?
maybe The National can take it to heart like Les Claypool did with "Primus Sucks"
This isn't my favorite from them, but is pretty good.

Makes me wish I knew a girl named Jennifer...love the hypnotic guitar playing
lovely!

Haunting. This band does no wrong. AMAZING live show as well.

I do like this band too!  The vocals are very distinct and memorable.
I rated this song a "2", my highest rating for a National song ever, because this song was only boring, unlike all of their other songs that flat out suck donkey balls
One of the best of many great bands RP has introduced to me.
my ultimate love failed song....
Love this song, I find myself playing it in my head all the time....catchy hook!!{#Cheers}
Wow, this after Cat Stevens — Into White amazing effect.
Haunting. This band does no wrong. AMAZING live show as well.
The opening lines are so true..Love this band, I'm so lucky that they love playing Ireland so much..{#Guitarist}

Phenomenal in concert.  More explosive; emotional.

Agreed. Much more powerful in concert. Great show.
I didn't know the singer could hit notes that high!
I wish I was fireproof. I'm always getting burned.

I like The National but can't listen to too much.  The singer is a bit monotonous. At least Morrissey livens his lyrics up with humour, irony and loads of other stuff.
lovely...
On my bucket list to see.
They, (The National) can do no harm...imho.
This song needs to be retired for a while.

Nice.

Most parents don't have a lot of mental space or patience for new music.

For music "that all sounds the same", this is compelling.  Just grabs you.
I'm getting tired of this song.
I just adore his voice.
Because "this song sucks", was taken

Excellent song on an excellent album of The National
Thank God and Allah, this piece of crap was followed by Puscifer,

Thank you for your well thought out and articulate critique.
I'm not "NationalProof", their song always break my heart. Another great song!
I have liked The National since I first heard their music, but this one was initially rated a 5. Now a 6.

Edit: Now it's a 9! What is happening!? I never rate 9!
These guys take so-so lyrics and add so much music and overlays that the lyrics grow into new meanings....
Interesting developments as so many new artists are doing things similar, but getting noticed and added to soundtracks for TV, Movies and advertisements... I like hearing something in the background and recognize it as music I first heard (and bought) here on RP...   Thank you

Wow! This is such a nice blend of a ballad with African rhythms in the background ... {#Cheers}

That's good to know. Those wind up being my favorite albums.
This album is definitely a grower.  The first time I listened to it I though it is so-so.  But the more times you listen to it, the more you like it.  in fact, after a few listens you start picking up lots of subtle things that make the songs interesting.

While the other efforts from The National were all very, very good, this album is great.

There's no reason for any song to get 9 plays a month on RP... none.

No complaints here.  Keep up the great work.

I just love it when people tell Bill and Rebecca how to run their radio station.  (Or, more accurately, when they tell the comment board how Bill and Rebecca should run their radio station.)

This is gorgeous.

Now Sid, let's do the math here.  9 plays last month. How many days in a month?  That's right, 31.  What is 31 divided by 9?  {#Rolleyes}

The National got it.

Yes! Just saw them recently in Maryland. They do a great live show.

I could see how they could give a good performance but their recordings are terrific downers: sorrowful  (intentionally) and sad (in terms of lack of musical value), just flat.
I have a love-hate relationship with National.

On the one hand, I like the different sound of the singer's voice and the music.

On the other, they are kind of like the over-burdened, needy friend who always tells you their problems ..

"Oh you lost your job - that's awful, what can I do?"
"Oh, you wife kicked you out - that's terrible, - come crash at my place "
"Oh, you are an alcoholic, - let me help you enrol in a program"
"Oh, you have cavities - call a dentist .."
"Oh, you have bad dreams ... that's ummm unfortunate"
"Oh, you find driving at night difficult - sorry, what? I stopped listening... go away for a while

I really love the National and own the last 3 albums.  I felt this album fell way short of the other two - none of the songs were that great even after 5-8 listenings of the whole album.  This song is one of the better ones but I feel it pales compares to the good songs on the last two albums.  I was really hoping for better.  A 6 for me on this - Pretty Good.

another band that puts out a lot of great music!!
Very promising on first listen...might be another band for me to look out for.
Cool album art too.
At first I wasn't blown away by this new The National album. I thought the songs all seemed more low-key and similar to each other. Then around the 3rd listen, the lyrics and subtleties in the arrangements (the builds especially) started to sink in. A couple listens after that and it's the album of the year so far, and likely my favourite from The National. I listened to Alligator again to compare and wow, what a maturity. I still would like a little bit of energy and raw aggression they showed in Alligator to be blended into this more polished sound.

Yeah, going to see them in Charlotte, NC in September (with Frightened Rabbit). Can't wait!
