Grab your bag and grab your coat
Tell the ones that need to know
We are headed north
One foot in and one foot back
But it don't pay to live like that
So I cut the ties and I jumped the tracks
For never to return
Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake, my head it spins
Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
When at first I learned to speak
I used all my words to fight
With him and her and you and me
Oh, but it's just a waste of time
Yeah, it's such a waste of time
That woman, she's got eyes that shine
Like a pair of stolen polished dimes
She asked to dance, I said it's fine
I'll see you in the morning time
Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake, my head it spins
Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Three words that became hard to say
I and love and you
What you were then, I am today
Look at the things I do
Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake, my head it spins
Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake, my head it spins (spins)
Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Dumbed down and numbed by time and age
Your dreams to catch the world, the cage
The highway sets the traveler's stage
All exits look the same
Three words that became hard to say
I and love and you
I and love and you
I and love and you
I don't know why, but I don't like these guys. I admit it, I have no good reason. I just don't. Something about their music strikes me as contrived.
i feel the same. i think we're in the minority.
Me and my girlfriend went to see the Avett Brothers in Paradiso Amsterdam last august.
A truly wonderfull and most excellent show but somehow a "Dave Grohl/Foo Fighters" moment snuck in there. Some guy in the audience picked a fight with another guy and they started to brawl so Scott stopped the band for a moment and politely asked what was going on and why those guys were fighting (unlike Dave Grohl who threw the word f#ck and motherf#cker in there a bunch of times). So after things cooled down a bit, they continued where they left off, which was this song and as if it was all part of the show, the lines "I used all my words to fight" .... "oh but it's such a waste of time" followed seconds after the event. That obviously made the audience applaud the way the Avett Brothers solved this situation.
Sadly enough some people think it's no problem to disturb a great show for something as stupid as fighting, on the other hand, it's great when a band feels so connected to the audience and acts on situations like that. It makes it much more intimate that way... An unforgettable night it was, the useless fight aside...
The most engaging band I've ever had the privilege to see (and I've experienced this privilege more than a dozen times), I recently took a friend to her first TAB show in Asheville, NC where she exclaimed, "I've never heard an audience sing along THIS much - and the band DIGS it!". I recorded Seth Avett on one occasion commenting to the crowd abouth the back and forth at their shows and how as an artist, it is joy bringing. Then we all shared a back and forth of LaLaLa's and headed right in to Go To Sleep. Great shows are unforgettable and what makes live music the BEST!

Thank you so much for sharing. I've had the honor of visiting Paradiso Amsterdam a few time and can easily imagine how amazing this event must have been, especially after that interuption.
Why? Queens wouldn't take you?
Would you really rather go to Queens? Of course, I wasn't impressed by any of the five Burroughs. Not impressed with NYC area at all actually. Maybe it was the traffic, the people, or the fact that I'm not a "city" kinda guy. I spent all my time behind the wheel with one hand on the wheel, another on the gear shifter, and another one out the sunroof with everyone's favorite finger in the air.
Of course, the authentic Italian pizza that was baked and sold by authentic Mexicans (who didn't speak English at all, good thing the girl I was with spoke spanish) was very good.

I agree, and it still rates a 9 for me.

You sure wouldn't know it from this song.
Why? Queens wouldn't take you?
"I" and "love" and "you"
Heartbreaking ... and yet beautiful.
Brooklyn Decker. There.
Yes, very nice!
The operative word here is Hate. Try not doing that.
Then by all means go explore their back catalogue. Much to enjoy there.
My opinion of the CD artwork.
I do like the song.
I love it when a song's lyrics seem to come from our own very lives and experiences like this gem from The Avett Brothers.
You say it like it's a bad thing.
No kidding! Heaven forbid.....
Ah Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape im in
My hands they shake my head it spins

However, not a hater, so no score from me. I'm voting "present" on this one.
It pains me to know that you have had and will have so many opportunities to see them... but haven't. You are cheating yourself.
I kinda see that. And I'm diggin it.
