Well, be-bop-a-lula, she's my baby
Be-bop-a-lula, I don't mean maybe
Be-bop-a-lula, she's my baby
Be-bop-a-lula, I don't mean maybe
Be-bop-a-lula, she's my baby love
My baby love, my baby love
Well, she's the girl in the red blue jeans
She's the queen of all the teens
She's the one that I know
She's the one that loves me so
Say be-bop-a-lula, she's my baby

Well, she's the one that gots that beat
She's the one with the flyin' feet
She's the one that walks around the store
She's the one that gets more more more

I have suddenly been transported back to a transport cafe, on our way to the Isle of Sheppy. sitting there with my Mum and Dad and our pie and chips with me pestering my Dad to put this on the jukebox over and over again.

In 1959 I was in a "record club" at high school in Dartford Kent. We were fortunate in that we had an older boy who was ahead of his time (although kept back a year !) in musical appreciation. He introduced us to real rock and roll and forever soured me on Cliff Richard (Living Doll) and his ilk by playing Gene Vincent and the real kings of R&R.
Never saw him in person, too young to get into the venues where he played.

THIS, Elvis,' and Jerry Lee Lewis' influence was how and why much later acts like Stray Cats & Queen felt compelled to trot it out again.
Not paying close attention, I thought it was Paul McCartney's cover from his "Unplugged" concert for MTV.
Shows me how good the original is. :-)

Love the flexible tempo. The way he gets carried away and rushes well ahead at the break.
One of the first "records" that I ever bought - Vinyl, 78rpm. I still love it!

I just realised this is like appreciating a fine antique. I was -2 when this came out but can appreciate its simple charm at a time before popular music had kicked off.
Slightly worn round the edges but still useful.

Man.. this thing has been covered over and over.
Even ol' Frank Farian tried to reboot his Boney-M legacy with it.
Stumbled over this little (somewhat kinky) gem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHr5Xp4werU
Imagine the rating for this song if it had been by Elvis. Brilliant vocal.

Gene was in the taxi that killed Eddie Cochran in a car crash. Gene only suffered a broken leg: the ruptured stomach ulcer that killed him was later.

In 1968 Gene Vincent tried to shoot Gary Glitter. From reports of subsequent events one can only assume it's too bad he missed,.
I used to drink in a pub where the barman claimed to have seen Gene take a leak, only noteworthy because Gene was still standing at the bar.
NB: This is real rock.

Like all groundbreaking tunes, it's hard to realize how this did NOT fit with the usual flow. Ballsy, different, and inspirational.
gives ya chills
SO totally fresh, cool, and cutting edge for 1956! Love it!
Listen closely class. This is what Rock and Roll can be. Notice how more than 60 years later it does not sound the least bit dated. Still as badazz as ever.

If they have, then why not take the term back?

OH SHIT, right...because nobody can use the term "ground zero" ever again after September 11, 2001. Totally reasonable. Carry on talking about music.

Like the Louie Prima song "Jump, Jive, an' Wail!" that RP played last night from the same year, it is noteworthy indeed how this stuff opened up and illuminated some interesting territory for music to go into — and it did! Long live ROCK!
