They say there's wreckage washing up
all along the coast
No one seems to know too much
Of who got hit the most
Nothing has been spoken
There's not a lot to see
But something has been broken
that's how it feels to me
We had a harmony
I never meant to spoil
Now it's lying in the water
Like a slick of oil
The tide is running out to sea
Under a darkening sky
The night is falling down on me
And I'm thinking that I should
Head on home
Been gone too long
Leave my roaming
Beachcombing
Little wild kitten out hunting
To see what he can get
You're in a big city now
won't stop growing yet
The sun is going down smoking
A flaming testament
Something has been broken
And it feels permanent
Little seabird flying
He knows where he wants to go
Guess i ought to pack my stuff
And do the thing I know
I turn around and head on back
Along the old sea wall
I felt something give and crack
And now I'm sorry that's all
Head on home
Been gone too long
Leave my roaming
Beachcombing
all along the coast
No one seems to know too much
Of who got hit the most

Both of their voices are so distinctive. Instantly recognizable.
Interesting duet but a great song!
love this music to lay myseĺf down and dream on - relax and make myself sure that i am still alife in a pure and positive way in love with myself and my dreams
The images on the slideshow of this song, let alone any other song RP plays, are incredible. A big shout out to the photographic curators on RP’s themed photographic slideshow accompaniment to their music, the only addition to this outstanding RP feature would be the lyrics, tastefully presented on top of the images, in a way so as not to detract from the visuals. That way,..we’ll mesmerized and enraptured for hours.

The gawdawful mechnical drum track makes this a very trying piece to hear. Had they had the sense to hire an actual, tasteful drummer, this might have been pretty good.

Don’t like it - skip it. I love this tune. The mandolin and their voices are heavenly

You're absolutely right. As I'm writing this comment I'm waiting for the drumming to change in tempo or style. It hasn't. Rick Beato (music producer) on YouTube has made a few interesting videos demonstrating what happens when drumming is quantized and maintains a constant tempo throughout the entire song. If my memory serves me correct, he illustrates what John Bonham's drumming sounds like when quantized. It's as you say - very trying to hear.

With these two incredible artists, how can I possibly not have this album already? Excuse me while do some clicking to fix that.
RP is rocking me today! Thanks!
Check out "Neck and Neck." Knopfler and Chet atkins.

Guess I better get Telegraph Road out of the car where it's been playing the last few days. And seek that note.

Appropriate, Michael is just now hitting Florida. Here, just light rain & bands of wind.
This album is wonderful!
She knows so much more, and told me to stick with there's so much ''here and now'' in Beachcombing.
Tasty stuff. I was just in Nashville last month seeing Shawn Colvin and Emmylou came out to sing a few songs with her, a very nice bonus to a great show.
How sweet. Their voices blend so well.
AMAZING!!!!!!!

I had been convinced that he wouldn't play 'Telegraph Road' because of the length, but about half way through, one of his back up musicians started playing that first, drawn out note, on some sort of Scottish pipe and the rest was utterly magical!

I would buy a CD of Mark Knopfler tuning his guitar. He is that good.

So many of Knopfler's recordings feature a strong backbeat. This one is Chad Cromwell.

I am SOOOOO in love with this song! The whole CD is wonderful, but this song just sends me to another realm...
Ya know, I've owned this CD for quite a while, and when I heard RP playing it so often at first, I thought I should just give it a 6, if I remember correctly......which I probably don't....It's a 9 now.
Just ordered this CD, and "Get Lucky" by Knopfler. I yuvs me my credit card...

Judging by the comments, this is the recurring Knopfler loop. I'm as much a fan as anyone, but that's a bit too much, well, repetition isn't quite the right word. Time to move on.

What a great video! I noticed that Knopfler's guitar solo was cranked up, but the pianist's finishing solo was barely-audible. Still, it was a good song. I really wish Knopfler and Harris had been in closer proximity to each other - it was almost as if they were shouting across the stage at each other, and I know that wasn't the intention - could be they needed the distance so they could harmonize.
Anyway, thanks, as always, calypsus_1!

The (english) uncle of a friend of mine was once married to Emmy-Lou. He was also a Country singer and his was the first album by a non-american to make the C&W chart in the US.
My friend always referred to her as Aunty Emmy-Lou - so whenever I hear her voice, that is what I hear in my head. Apparently, E-L went to see The Boss in concert and she asked to go backstage and meet him. Both artistes stood speechless and jaw-dropped in awe at seeing each other. How nice!

No matter what song, Knopfler has such a distinctive voice, he seems always to be singing the same song. Upbeat, downbeat, ballad, blues, rock,...alla same, alla time. Zzzzzzzzz......
(imoh) M.K. is probably in the top 10 most gifted guitarist that has ever walked the Earth. His technical ability, sense of melody and warmth of spirit merge for a truly exquisite musical texture that more then compensates for any vocal shortcoming. M.K.'s presence in any genre on any recording increases the quality or of that work exponentially. Check out his work with with Chet Atkins.
This is so good.
Mark Knopfler does have a country connection. He asked Vince Gill to become a member of Dire Straits in the late 80's. Vince Gill did not accept the offer.

Very nice indeed! Good arrangement, sweet guitar work, and they sound very fine together.
Best album of 2006?

OK. That's it. The only fair comparison is to have a Knopfler/Krauss album and a Plant/Harris recording.
I feel that the former would be majestic. Her voice and his guitar? Yumm.

More than a nod to Richard Thompson here from MK.

But the fool with a heavy hand on the volume control will find that lil' Emmylou's high-pitched voice comes through like a chisel to the eardrums. Gotta be careful listening to her stuff.
