Ellie Lawson — L.A.
Flying into Heathrow, I know,
I've got a lot to think about
Let's write off the day
And go chill back at mine for a while
Walking through the high street, my god
Why do I feel so vulnerable
The cars and the posters
The people all look so different here
From two weeks ago
I'm under the spell of LA
And I don't want to be here
I'm under the spell of LA
And I don't want to be home
Jumpin' in a black cab, it's raining
Watching the lights turn red again
My driver he's seen New York
But LA is one of them way distant dreams
I close my eyes
I never shoulda said goodbye
I'm under the spell of LA
And I don't want to be here
I'm under the spell of LA
And I don't want to be home
(la la la la la la la la la la la la)
(unde lay undlay ah ah unde lay uh ah)

Ellie "Alanis Chakira" Lawson
Hmm, wondering why I never heard such a well-produced CD so I googled:
"Atlantic Records declined to release Ellie Lawson's debut album, The Philosophy Tree. Shortly after being dropped by Atlantic, Lawson picked up the pieces and got herself an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres' successful daytime talk show. Following that appearance, Barnes & Noble came to the rescue, arranging an exclusive release of the album through its retail stores, and in August 2005 Philosophy Tree finally appeared. And it's weird that Atlantic passed, because Lawson's debut is a dead ringer for Unwritten, the debut of similarly blonde, similarly British Natasha Bedingfield that blew up the U.K. charts."

How many girls who were say 12 to 16 in 1995 when Jagged Little Pill came out. I'm surprised there aren't more daughters of Morrisette considering the ubiquity of that record.

By the way, Bill's playing "They Might Be Giants" at the moment. They sound a lot like ... crap.
Wow! First time I've heard this, and I really like it! Just enough unique flavor to the vocals and interpretation to make me prick up my ears. Bravo!
Holy, this has been around for almost three years? I second your take on this tune. Funny how people get so pre-occupied trying to compare styles/singers/writers, etc. Every artist is influenced to some extent by those who have come before. So what? You either like the song - or you don't. Spare us the comparisons.By the way, Bill's playing "They Might Be Giants" at the moment. They sound a lot like ... crap.

Wow Fred - I had totally forgotten the Cocteau Twins.
Are they on the playlist here? Anyone got any to upload? I wanna hear them NOW!!!
Liz Fraser called soon after. This is so Cocteau Twins-like, including the 'non-words' in the chorus. Ver' nahce :)

All that said and true. It is nice, I think.

Alanis Morissette called...she wants her sound back.

wow, Orbit's song in a whole new light. I can be convinced with a few more listens... You know, my first reaction was "Cocteau Twins?"

Not bad at all, but I'm really hearing Venus Hum here.
Same here. Or Matson Belle.

Ey! This uses William Orbit's "Sea green" in the background!
Check https://williamorbit.com/ and click the player until you get "Hello Waveforms - Sea Green".
I'm pretty sure that's in the background of a Beth Orton song...
Good song !
ow...thought this was Edie Brickell from New bohemians...must be her sister.

"I'm under the spell of *Italy* and I don't want to be home..."
That's how I feel today.
Her yodeling makes it pretty difficult for my speech centre to pick out what she's actually saying.
She could sing in hindi for all I care, I like it enough for a 7 anyway =)
Interesting so many people don't like this. Oh well, I like it. Different R Us
Annoyingly reminiscent of Alanis was my take.

More like a grown-up version. I wouldn't mind hearing some more from her.

This is giving me a headache. Something about this is just really hard to listen to.

This sounds just like something (the first track? i forget...) off William Orbit's latest album - minus the vocals, of course.

That's exactly what I was hearing. Nothing wrong with that.

Axle Rose's sister. "Sweet Child of Mine"
... ...
This time I was sure, sure I tell you, that this was Alanis' alter ego, so I went to AllMusic to see if she was. Amazingly, Alanis isn't even listed under "similar artists". I was stunned. Anyway, she's a different (blond) person for sure. Actually, I like her better than Alanis. So there.
Solid 1

Yep, I SO totally thought that, and wondered what RP was up to.
It's more interesting than Alanis, I must say...
Great use of electronics and voice-overs. Me likes it v.much!

Not that there is some grand distinction between this and the other sound-alikes, but I was convinced that this was another passable song from Matson Belle.
agreed - i thought it WAS alanis. not too bad, i guess. for a girl.

Actually, I was thinking Beth Orton. Not bad.
