So excellent! Always makes me stop and listen... Always makes me want to see the fantastic, surreal movie "Waking Life" again, too... This song, I believe, is what the gals in the live orchestra heard jamming in the basement below the street are playing as the omniscient, roving point-of-view takes its first big panning swoon around at the undeniably living, breathing freaking reality that the film wants us looking through for awhile... In any case, I feel sure it's a Piazzola piece -- and it fits and transcends so perfectly on so many levels; yes! I simply MUST watch that again... I'm forever grateful for the celebration and expression of genius, Mr. Ma, RP, Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and all involved in that seminal, prophetic, and unforgettable film!
16 years on the Playlist, Brilliant still and always a very pleasant surprise!
You know how you sometimes read something that isn't there?
At first glance it looked like "You Mama's Soul" - what an odd title for a cello track, lol

Could you call this waltzy-peppy?
Can you be peppy and dancing a waltz?
Tango? Of course. I'm no fool. I'm an Idiot Wind.
Ha!

First I've heard Yo-Yo Ma on this channel. But the comments have been here for over 11 years.

This song makes me crave a bottle of Bordeaux, a wheel of chabrion , and a loaf of French bread.

Simply superb.
Take your time and learn about Piazzolla! You'll see, that Yo Yo's interpretation is a very good one!
Mama's got a squeezebox, she wears on her chest

Reminds me of 12 Monkeys.

Sorry to correct you, but it is 'Suite Punta del Este', not 'Mar del Plata'. As Uruguayan, I feel in the obligation to correct this little confusion of "balneario".
The soundtrack of "12..." has 'Suite Mar del Plata' (another Piazzolla's composition) as the one that opens the titles in the movie.

I just recently saw that movie after not having seen it since it came out. It's better than I remember. Maybe seeing it more than once takes some of the initial confusion out of the story, since it's not straightforward.
But I get it confused with "The Fifth Element", which wasn't so good then and still isn't.
Everytime I hear the squeezebox played like this I think of the movie "12 Monkeys"

Easy to call this being eclectic,
but hard to call it RUBBISH,
when played on RP.

See the movie "The Tango Lesson" if you like this music. This is part of the sound track. A great movie, imo.
Great performance by Yo-Yo. I was very lucky to see Piazzolla live in the late 80's, shortly before the stroke that ended his career. It was one of those concerts where you walk out afterwards feeling like a changed person - it was music and a type of performance I'd never seen before.

Yo Mama. Where I come from that is an insult.
Wow! Yo-yo on RP....now THAT'S eclectic!
I like the spoken version better.

You can never get too much Yo-Yo.
I have been a long time admirer of Ma but only became familiar with Piazzola through RP. What a happy convergence this is.
That is so good! It lets me crave for a milonga evening.
Love this piece! I once used it for a presentation on Latin-American music styles back in college.
Piazolla!!! I'm happy again :)
This arrangement puts so much urgency into this song....and that's good!

Hello cheap italian restaraunt.
This sounds like the soundtrack for Waking Life.
Muy buena versión.
First a mambo, now a tango. How I wish I were able to do some of those hot latin dances....
That's libertango, liberty + tango
Superb!
I enjoy this quite thoroughly, although in my mind it takes me towards the music I hear in Cirque du Soleil productions like Quidam or Varekai.
Love it, love it, I'm just imagining a trapeze up in the high ceiling of our office with performers just putting on a show. Just my overactive imagination again!
ARGH!
Why truncate Libertango!?
The horror...
Play the original version

Same here =) Then again it was Piazzolla penning the main theme to the movie.
A 9 track by the way, I got the rest of this album.
the tango and cello are both inherently sexy. good combination - but the chest piano steals the show on this one.

I agree with you completely. I thought this track was part of the soundtrack to the movie "Waking Life." That whole soundtrack was done by the Tosca Tango Orchestra and the movie was shot in Austin. I love how "on the same page" we were there.

Yes, it's even here at RP.
Thank you, Bill, for playing this!
And thank you to the uploader, too.

Not knocking the song or his talents, but doesn't the name "Yo-Yo Ma" sound gangsta to you?

Well, here is an Asian who can sensitively and affectionately render homage to the tango. Go figure! I see the connection to the David Byrne attempt to do Latin American, but this succeeds where that didn't. Of course it might also have to do with the fact that this has nary a horn.
excellent track! the background music reminds me a lot of mr bungle's 'violenzia domestica.'
ahhhh... Piazzolla... a genius...
