There's no more little secrets we haven't yet disclosed
We bore the living daylights of anyone too close
And all our cards at Christmas are written to us both
Count them up who's got the most?

Said we'd be close
Said we'd work perfectly
Said that we'd toast
Beautiful company

Closer than a sister to her baby brother
Closer than a cat to the child that she'll smother
It's too close for a lover
It's too close for a lover
We are each other
We are each other

We've been through all positions and this one's definitely best
You move Middle East and I'll move Wild West
What happened to our friendship we could easily have guessed
Add it up we're self-possessed

Said we'd be true
Said we'd be so so proud
Just me an you
We'd shout it out aloud

Closer than a sister to her baby brother
Closer than a cat to the child that she'll smother
It's too close for a lover
It's too close for a lover
We are each other
We are each other

Remember we went shopping and we went by piggyback
I shaved all my legs and you grew hairs upon your back
Well no-one's ever been since to this lover's shack
It's a cul-de-sac

Said we'd be close
Said we'd work perfectly
Said that we'd toast
Beautiful company

Said we'd be true
Said we'd be so so proud
Just me an you
We'd shout it out aloud

Closer than a sister to her baby brother
Closer than a secret agent working under cover
It's too close for a lover
It's too close for a lover
We are each other
We are each other

Great hooks in this song. Not their best but I like!
the smiths on prozac
The lyrics are pretty good but the tune is grating. I do like the pairing of deceptively sunshiney music with dark lyrics, as someone mentioned earlier is this band's thing. But this song, this tune, yeah, definitely grating.
If I never hear this again...it'll be too soon

Holy crap, I can't agree with my-self enough.

Um, I suggest reading Paul Heaton's lyrics more thoroughly next time. Most of the time, it is pure cyanide deceptively wrapped in the glossiest of candy paper.
Oops, I must admit I dont know the BF's lyrics very well. I probably missed out on some good points. I expect that they're similar to the Housemartin's "Happy hour", which is not actually "happy" at all, like most of that album. All quite "angry young man". Also, I've been meaning to upload "Reverend's revenge" for a long time, a very nice simple-happy-tune of "London 0, Hull 4". Just happens to be the only instrumental song.
Especially Perfect 10

Hahaha awesome! So true in their case, and it's part of their charm in my opinion.
GEMMA Music !

What? No "36D" off this CD being played on RP? So, in other words, is that all that you got?
What about Something That You Said? I love playing that song for people--so unexpected :-)
THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH!!! HOW EXCITING!!! No one EVER plays this band and I have been a HUGE fan since the early 90s. This is why I love this station...they play obscure stuff I adore!

Well, I HOPE you mean the guitar-style, which is vaguely similar. The atmosphere, lyrics and spirit of The Beautiful South are usually light and happy, and probably exactly opposite to the mostly dark misanthropy of The Smiths. Still, in a few exception-songs, you may have a point. Bill, this band deserves to have more songs in the RP playlist!
Yep! You exactly pointed it! More Beautiful South and more Housemartins pls.

Er.... NO!
At first I thought it was the Barenaked Ladies. I hope I do not offend the band by this comparison!
Shades of The Smiths?
Such under-recognized talent.

They assume the cat will smother a child? That's Felineaphobia!! I demand a retraction!!

They split up earlier this year, citing 'musical similarities'. We are each other, indeed. https://beautifulsouth.co.uk/main.html

This is mindless drivel. Sounds like something off a soundtrack from a bad 80's movie.
Just doesn't do it for me... getting images of 4 guys in matching Nehru jackets, with go-go girls in white boots backing them up...

An old wives tale ...a cat will sit on a new borns chest while it sleeps because of the odour of fresh milk on the babys breath ...resulting in ...your got it! gasp! smothered! ...it's a tounge in cheek comment kids ...the song is about a couple who have grown too! close! ..."we are each other"

Yeah...I didn't quite get that either.
So this band reminds everyone of someone else, I guess. For me, it's the Barenaked Ladies.
High rating because this is my wife's favorite band!

my first reaction is always: "Yeah, Judybats"
ditto, thanks, it was driving me crazy, the name of the band (is it the same singer?)
...it's in the CD drive of my vehicle as I type, I loved the music this band produced, very British and very satirical, but there were some interesting dark themes explored in their lyrics, was happy to learn some time ago that Mr Heaton owns a bicycle shop in Hull England. …hopefully they still tour …anybody know?
Pop fluff.

Had to stop it. Mute wasn't strong enough.

I like Fatboy Slim a lot, and have strained to hear the Housemartins influence in his work. It's not so hard with The Beautiful South! Fun stuff! An 8 from me.
Oh! It's Culture Club!

Did he actually just say closer than a cat to the child that she'll smother ?? Lovely.
This is the album version, but I've heard a version on sat radio that replaced all of the "cat" lines with the "secret agent" lines - must be someone's idea of a "family friendly" version!
a bit "jaunty" for my taste.
Excellent...
Always reminds me of Maryte and Dionysus... The lyrics...
Always Loved the Beautiful South. Always will. Thanks Bill.
coolest album artwork. The jangly guitar gave it away as a Housemartins relative... my London 0 Hull 4 is on vinyl... and pristine.
With the crappy day I've been having, this is a welcome diversion. Thanks Bill for the truly great music.
Indeed, P.d.Heaton was previously in the Housemartins. Great singer!
Oh those ironic brits! I think the writer/frontman was from the Housemartins - definitely the dry english sensibility in this (and most of their songs)

Relax. Thats an old wive's tale.
Hmmmph. Pretty, but icky.
yup, that about sums it up
reminds me too much of bare naked ladies

Always enjoy Beautiful South.

The songs are at best simplistic and at worst not as good as something a high school band might turn out.
Simplistic? You might want to try listening to the lyrics. The thing I love about The Beautiful South is they wrap such dark themes in popish music. Brilliant.

Agreed. Always great to hear The Beautiful South, here in the beautiful south... Great pop song! Thanks RP!
Paul Heaton drinks in my local pub, hes a regular, really nice local guy in Hull, England.

This band are utterly dreadful and I can't understand why people like them so much. The songs are at best simplistic and at worst not as good as something a high school band might turn out. As bad as it gets really! The only time on RP I have wanted a zero rating.

Meh.

Only really really cool sites like Radio Paradise are brilliant enough to drag out The Beautiful South!!!! Thanks for the dance
this sounds like the Bare Naked Ladies, though I can't decide whether or not it's worse...
The singer sounds kinnda like Bernard Sumner no?
it's happy hour again!
What is the big fuzz with all the comments? It sounds like George Michael all along...

Astute analysis! My sentiments exactly.
I love The Beautiful South, but this isn't even close to their best song.
I have been a long-time fan of The Beautiful South. 0898 is a superb album. The female singer on this album was called Briana Corrigan. She left and was replaced by Jacqui Abbot who featured on the cover version of 'Everybody's Talking'. She has since left and they now have Alison Wheeler. I'm much prefer the earlier stuff such as 'Welcome to..' 'Choke' and '0898', I'm not as keen on the more recent years as it's a bit country sounding for me. They have just released an album of covers, it's bizarre, there is a slow version of 'It's A Living Thing' and apparently there's a cover of You're the one That I Want' but I've yet to have the pleasure(?) of hearing that one! Saw them in '97 they were great and so were the supporting act The Lightning Seeds.

Hmm.... I uploaded this one but got a "sorry"... glad it made it though. BS has quite an impressive catalog that goes back to the late 80s... much of which would be a great fit here. The female singer (can't recall her name) who does some of the songs is excellent also.

Paul Heaton has great pipes!
This song is wonderful. The Beautiful South is wonderful. Radio Paradise is so so wonderful!
Yep -- and one of the coolest album covers ever.
I used to love the Housemartins and always wondering what happened to them.. They became The Beautiful South. I had no idea. I look forward to listening to more.
