In the dark, who can see his face?
In the dark, who can reach him?
He hides like a child.
He hides like a child.
Keeps his finger on the trigger
You know he can't stand the day
Shoot out the lights.
Shoot out the lights.
Keep the blind down on the window
Ah, keep the pain on the inside
Just watching the dark.
Just watching the dark.
Ah he might laugh but you won't see him
As he thunders through the night
Shoot out the lights.
Shoot out the lights.
In the darkness the shadows move
In the darkness the game is real
Real as a gun.
Real as a gun.
As he watches the lights of the city
And he moves through the night
Shoot out the lights.
Shoot out the lights.
Shoot out the lights.
Ah, shoot out the lights.
In the dark, who can reach him?
He hides like a child.

Fabulous Album! Strong emotions run through every song.

Excellent!
I just love music. If it makes me dance, I love it. If it depresses me, I love it (within reason.) I try very hard not to analyze the technical aspects of a song or an artist, so when I read comments about whether Thompson used a moog or a wa-wa or whatever all else could influence a song's sound, I still just listen to what I'm given and base my love or hate on that.
Sorry if I fail to to meet up to those huge expectations of those who can't just take a song at ear-value and have a little fun.
I am a loser.

Richard is a genius, we are also seeing him again in July at Bath.

I am surprised at all the negativity. RT's songs and characters are dark- they bring you down to the depths of your soul- truth and beauty mingle to reveal something REAL. His guitar work is masterful, his songwriting is sublime. Yes - his voice is recognizable and unique, but that is why he stands out.
To those who are not fans- go see him play solo live and you will be blown away- guaranteed!

Dogpound, obviously, you have never seen him live: your attitude would change immediately. Ask any guitarist their opinion of Richard Thompson: anyone who knows their chops treats him like the royalty he is.

When it starts - I always think this is gonna be Link Wray. But it's O-K.
All bow down! Seeing him in July (for ?th time) - a guitar great!

I am not a fan of this song, whether is the Thompsons or Los Lobos. It's a dirge that just drags me down, crashing and tumbling...problem must be on my end, because I love everything else both groups come up with.
FWIW, I think that Richard Thompson is extremely talented and clever; however, I mostly dislike his vocal style, but I like this better than most of his output. I like most of what he sang with his ex more than most of his other stuff. I really like much of his 2006 1000 Years of Popular Music release.

I love his voice so much...I'd even listen to him sing the pina colada song, the macarena song, baby one more time - all sorts of craptastic songs - but this one is pretty dull.
Now that's shredding !
Mesmerizingly boring.
o gosh...

Compression is used in broadcasting so people don't get scared when quiet music suddenly gets loud.
While this is good for folks who scare easy, it's kind of a drag for musicians and producers who like to scare people, and the folks who like a good jolt now and then.
I think my husband invented this stuff. He says it has to do with things sounding different in big theaters versus people's home theaters.

I would imagine in the context below they were referring to digital and mp3 compression, considering they were comparing CD audio vs. Radio Paradise vs. a live performance. There's this link for the wiki article, but I'm afraid it's long on specifications and short on explainations.
But I love how you break down dynamic compression for industry usage! Even though radio stations compress the hell out of advertisements so they blast your ears out while still falling within legal parameters - and that crap always startles me. :(

I had only heard the Los Lobos version, which I dig.
I like this version as well, my understanding is that this is the original. Salute!
Radical guitar has a bit of a Roy Buchanan feel to it.

Strange that so many Richard (& Linda) Thompson songs have been 'sorried'.

Joining you in applause. You should hear Richard Thompson's "I Agree With Pat Metheny." He's so devilish and fearless - wickedly funny.

I just love the hell out of Richard Thompson. He did a song called "I Agree With Pat Metheny," and another one dedicated to Janet Jackson (and her fashion malfunction.) Neither of these would be appropriate for RP, but I might just submit them anyway, because I'm an I'll-be-go-to-hell kind of person...

Its a great song and sounds even better with even less compression when he does it live . I try to catch his shows whenever he is playing reasonably nearby.
Wow, just bought the cd and listening to the uncompressed version on the same stereo, it's amazing! RP probably has the best sonic quality out there but this song uncompressed rips like you would never know.

OK. Is it just me? Where's Linda?
Richard and Linda have a very gifted son.....Teddy
I much prefer this one to the Lobos

Los Lobos would say “needs more crash cymbal!”
Start is so much like 'Rumble'

Can't believe I get the first (er second) comment on the title song from one of the most highly critically acclaimed albums of all time.
What a great tune. Richard is an amazing musician.
