Hitch-hiked her way across the U.S.A.
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side,
Said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side.
Candy came from out on the island,
In the backroom she was everybody's darling,
But she never lost her head
Even when she was giving head
She said, hey baby, take a walk on the wild side
She said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls go,
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo

Little Joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay
A hustle here and a hustle there
New York City is the place where they said:
Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said hey Joe, take a walk on the wild side
Sugar Plum Fairy came and hit the streets
Lookin' for soul food and a place to eat
Went to the Apollo
You should have seen him go go go
They said, hey Sugar, take a walk on the wild side
I said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side
Jackie is just speeding away
Thought she was James Dean for a day
Then I guess she had to crash
Valium would have helped that dash
She said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls say
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo

Marc Bolan. David Bowie. Freddie Mercury. The glam/trans gender thang had a young woman in her 20's simultaneously a bit fascinated and confused. However, as any good audiophile will confess, I don't give a fekk what they might do offstage, just damn grateful these artists were ON stage.
I was looking at a song done by Orville Peck on You Tube recently. Almost all the comments were about his sexuality. I posted a comment that I could care less about that... I came for the music!
Best song ever, by someone who is a terrible vocalist.
Probably the most accurate and the funniest comment I think I've read here!
Does "and the colored girls say" make anyone else cringe?
Not really. This is from 1972. A little presentism is OK, but acknowledge it.
this what ya call "rap"?
I think the technical term is sprechgesang.
This song is iconic and hard not to like but 'mellow'?
Well, it's two different meanings of the word.
and Bowie's "Space Oddity" were top 40 hits in the Spring
of 1973..
I think the word your looking for is "queer," as Reed references folks that transcend sexuality, gender, and other tendencies usually rejected by a heteronormative society.
In this case I think queer also works because Reed appears to be celebrating oddness as a trait worthy of examination.
But yeah... the way you expressed it was pretty bad.

Yep, because it's "and the colored girls go"
If you don't like that, then avoid "I Wanna Be Black" where he consults his backup singers. It's brilliant and hysterical, really.
Yes. I learned that just the other day. The characters in the song are based on actual transgender people who hung around with Andy Warhol in his Factory. I used to think Lou had to be straight, but it turns out he was sexually liberal and was willing to go wherever it took him.
I can't image anyone other than Lou doing the voice-over (and not ruining it)

How long has it been since we used last used anything other than the (now) standard two letter abbreviations for states?
On July 1, 1963, the Post Office Department implemented the five-digit ZIP Code, which was placed after the state name in the last line of an address. To provide room for the ZIP Code, the Department issued two-letter abbreviations for all states and territories.

Well, this one actually:
Yes; I should have specified "the album this song was originally on". Oh, well.

Not bad but perhaps sad. You are absolutely entitled to like whatever you want as long as you don't enforce your preferences on others. However If you exclude music on the basis on race, religion or sexual preference you limited your life and that is sad.

Makes perfect sense!
apparently David Bowie ( , and also ) helped LR a lot with this song!
Bowie and Mick Ronson produced this album.

Agreed. Except...that each of us is according the selfsame opportunity, a one-time-only offer.
Maybe you need some more time before coming out?
Maybe you need some more time before coming out?
A burst of joy, and now that Lou has left us, a touch of nostalgic melancholy.
One of the best songs ever.
"Little Joe never once...Little Joe was an idiot!"
Hmmm, so very gay is alright, just as long as it's not very very gay?
Just checking.

Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros at St. Ann´s Warehouse, Brooklyn NYC, Apr.5.2002.
"Joe gave it his all to the end, didn't he? Such a gentle man who nevertheless shared an intense passion for justice and the common man. His legacy goes beyond the music, as great as that is. drgrl 2
"Well Joe Strummer when he was with the Clash used to play live in big stadiums in front of big audience but with Mescaleros played live in small clubs and that was the only thing that he always wanted even when he was with the Clash (but success and populariry are bad things)....the reason? simply to be close with the people....thats was Joe and we ll never forget him....RIP....He died from a heart attache but his HEART WAS TOO BIG for the humanity....thank you for your beautiful music!!!" xsandinistax

If you're from planet rubbish and rubbish is good yes. Then definitely yes.
Otherwise you must be off your rocker!
I've seen him 3 times. 1st time was his rock & roll animal tour. Amazing. Second concert in Wellington NZ the first night...he forgot to turn up. Pity about all the wasted drugs. But he came back the next night and blew me away again
ROFL...stick to cubes M8.

I never realized how much Lou Reed looks like Stephen King.
If you avoid listening to to every classic rock station and stick to RP then this glorious piece of music is played with just about the right regularity.
Hear, hear!
And it serves as an awesome chaser to wash away the suffyawn stevens "taste" out of my ears. . .

I'm Canadian, but I use "Mass"...and I'm not entirely sure what the two-letter abbreviation is, to be honest. Is it "MA"?
Basically it's all moot anyway. The 5 digit zip code makes the city and state superfluous. If you use the 9 digit zip code then that adds the street address as well.
Any your guess is correct. Massachusetts is "MA" (old school = Mass). "MS" would be Mississippi (old school = "Miss")

I believe it became standard some time in the late 1980's.

The saxophone solo played over the fadeout of the song was performed by Ronnie Ross, who had previously taught David Bowie to play the saxophone during Bowie's childhood.

A very smelly one at that, as in burn toxic waste.

Very well stated! I Agree!
