A nice breeze blows in
whenever the big fella
cracks a grin
And when the time and the pace is right,
we sit down,
sip some bouillabaisse

Ahhh, I've gonna have me
a little fun
I've got a candle, I can get
a lot of reading done

Somewhere the sun is shining
(Shining, shining, shining)
On this world
but not for me
Two lovers' hearts a-rising
(Rising, rising, rising, rising)
Oh, how long before I'm free?

Ah, yes, I...
Feel like Jonah
in the belly of the whale
I get so lonely
in the belly of the whale

(Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
Yeah, I feel like Jonah
in the belly of the whale
(Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
And I say now,
if we swim faster
(we're sure to come back)

Ahhh, you didn't please everyone
Got thrown off the boat
before the trip was done
So with a smile on your face,
you disappeared
without a trace
(Whoo)

Ahhh, I've gonna have us
a little fun
(Wow, down, down, down)
I've got a candle, we can get
a lot of reading done

Somewhere the sun is shining
(Shining, shining, shining)
On this world
but not for me
Two lovers' hearts a-rising
(Rising, rising, rising, rising)
Oh, how long before I'm free?

Ah, yes, I...
Feel like Jonah
in the belly of the whale
Gotta keep my head up now
if I wanna come back
It gets so lonely
in the belly of the whale
You wanna know you belong here
but you've only got trapped
Hey!

(Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
Don't you feel like Jonah
in the belly of the whale?
(Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
But I say now,
if we swim faster
(we're sure to come back)

Come back, come back,
come back, come back, come back, come...

Somewhere the sun is shining
On this world
but not for me
Two lovers' hearts a-rising
(Rising, rising, rising, rising)
Oh, how long before I'm free?

Ah, yes, I...
(Yes I, yes I, yes I, yes I, yes I, yes I...)

I feel like Jonah
in the belly of the whale
Gotta keep my head up now
if I wanna come back
I get so lonely
in the belly of the whale
You wanna know you belong here
yet you've only got trapped

(Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
Yeah, it feels like Jonah
in the belly of the whale
(Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
Did I tell you now?
If we swim faster
(we're sure to come back)

Come back, come back, come back, come back, come back...

Uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh-oh
Whoooooooo-whoo

not a little - Sounds just like it (in the mezcaleros era)
Always nice to hear something by these guys that's not from the Repo Man soundtrack!

This made me crack up.  thanks!
I was 15 when this came out and XRT in Chicago was playing it and loved it.  I just turned 55 and still love it.  One of those songs that just take me back to my youth at that time.
Edit: Everything I can find says it was released in 1983
I just found a release of this song on Qobuz - May 27 2020 - that is a better mastering than this one. Nice!
The more I hear this, the more I like it!!  Thank You RP!
Excellent!!! I never heard of them before. Thank You RP!
More Strummer plz.

listening to it before seeing the lyrics I kept hearing, "I get so lonely with a baby on the way . . ." which didn't make a lot of sense.

I hear some old time Bahamian rhythms  but that's obscure stuff.

Didn't you hear...He is ALL the way back.
I hear Dave Wakeling and the late Ranking Roger as the English Beat.
My introduction to this song is a cover of it by Fighting Gravity.

It's nice to hear the original, for reference.

Lived in Santa Monica listening to the same.  KNAC.  I still have some cassettes I recorded off their site when they did the "Top 105 1/2" songs of the year on New Years Eve.
Thanks for the memories, John

Some friend gave me a mixed cassette tape and I loved this song but could never figure it out.  It seems to be best played at volume 10 only.  Rock on RP!

Yeah, 80s summertime fluff.  I mean that as a compliment!!  {#Dancingbanana}

Now let's see, as I recall this band splintered out of the Motels. I had the vinyl back in the day and it's great to hear this cut again.

Wow...Bruce Springsteen's sound on acid.  I kinda like it.  6/10

I could've sworn you were right. This song is so quintessentially 80's  it had to have been used in an 80's movie.

Close, but no cigar. This song wasn't used in a cheesy 80's movie, but another one of their songs was. From Wikipedia:

The group is best known for its MTV hit "Belly of the Whale", and for covering the Jonathan Richman song "Pablo Picasso", which was included in both the 1984 film and soundtrack of director Alex Cox's Repo Man starring Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez.

How Clash of them. . .

never did see the video b4 living without a TV for so many years.....looked it up on youtube and cracked up.....found out it's from 1983 instead of '79....a few years kinda ran together there for me....

I definetely have to agree!
When I hear this I just picture a bunch of drunken college guys singing this on the Gong Show. Ridiculous, but what great fun.
If this is what it sounds like in the belly of the whale, it can't be half bad.

Is there a quick way to see who uploaded a particular song from the web interface?
Nuevo wavo from beyond the grave. Muy excellent!
This takes me back. I spun this a few times on the air DJing at a college station in Keene, NH. What a fun time. The station\'s tagline was \"WKNH, it\'s not sex, but it will do\". LOL.
This reminds me of some cheesy 80's movie's ending credits song. This gets a 2 from me; I didn't barf (yet) from it.
The bad thing of being eclectic is that songs like this one have its space in.
Reminds me of vintage MTV
please, please can someone tell me how i can get a cd or mp3 of this tune - i have looked and can't find? thanks!!
This is one of those few reggae based pop songs that I really like!

...And somewhere in the RP universe, someone sends trekhead a PM about this tune...
it's peanut butter jelly time!
Such a fun song!!!!!
i'm not sure about this one. perhaps it has something to do with the fact i don't have my headphones today at work so i am forced to hear this from the crappy speakers in the computer...with the overhead music going too.
sounds over-produced and they dont even get a decent tone out of the instruments (or whatever electronica they are manipulating)

Fun movie with a great soundtrack - but the best rendition of 'Pablo Picasso' remains John Cale's. - Riff P.S. I always have liked 'Belly of the Whale' - a great Friday song. Another song that gets me pressing the gas pedal down a bit!
Eh. This don\'t do much for me. But their \"Pablo Picasso Was Never Called An Asshole\" on Repo Man kicked some serious Eldorado butt.... (pimp)
