The mona lisa's sister doesn't smile
She tried to pose but only for a while
Leonardo sent her home since then she has lived alone
With her few belongings and a copy of a painting of herself unhappy
She is going to burn it when she's ready

Get started, start a fire
Get started, start a fire
Get started, start a fire
Get started, start a fire

Marilyn was lying all alone with an empty bottle by the phone
Kennedy was not around she was cold when she was found
But she'd gone where the goddesses are sleeping
Where the molten tongues of flame are leaping
Or where the angel's hearts are beating

Get started, start a fire
Get started, start a fire
Get started, start a fire
Get started, start a fire

Joan of arc was burning at the stake somebody had made a big mistake
She had lit a cigarette in an aiport where you get
All your fingers taken off for smoking.
Meanwhile up the road a factory's choking
The ones who killed her work there I'm not joking

Get started, start a fire
Get started, start a fire
Get started, start a fire
Get started, start a fire

Get started, start a fire
Get started, start a fire
Get started, start a fire
Get started, start a fire

And I thought I was the only one who liked this song.
Incredibly catchy! Killer bass; ~what a groove~! I can still remember hearing this on KBCO my last semester as an undergrad at CU... Psych Furs, The Cure, The Smiths, R.E.M., T-Heads, U2.; great tunes to party to!

I Agree completely!

Let's hear more Graham Parker--an overlooked artist. Lots of good stuff of his out there!

Yes! I Agree!
que relaxante 👍
Good to hear GP again.  Last saw him when I was working the sound board for sound check at The Hollywood Bowl when he was touring with John Hyatt.  This was early 80's when John Hyatt was considered 'New Wave'.  How times have changed.

Same category as Marshall Crenshaw, Dave Edmunds, Lloyd Cole. Same sound, I like 'em all.

But most especially,  Joe Jackson

Excellent!

Guess I just like the bassline and the minor chords. It stands out. The acoustic guitar is pretty nifty too.

And the lyrics are very potent.
What a boring track😣
The posts here are quite old. It seems the song is out of play for a long time. It's a pity for this little gem of Graham.
Now that's tedious. Apparently, the idea is that you can make a boring song even better by stretching it out to 5 minutes.
This is a 4, I say. As for the 80's quality of this song, I would find the 80's pretty hard pressed to even find room for this one. They're pretty steeped in this kind of material already.

Wears the 80s on its sleeve. Enjoyable.

Listening to that song was the equivalent of eating cardboard.
this song is absolutely horrendous. and i mean that in the worst possible way.
Inspiring.... Inspiring me to vomit. But I didn't up-chuck so I gave it a 2.
State of the Art Pop Music
extremely horrible. what's next, the Ghost Busters Theme?
Graham Parker was unfortunately overshadowed by performers like Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson (who both are excellent musicians and song writers themselves). Thus he unfortunately never received much airplay.
I have visions of Don Johnson, holding a microphone, crouching over with his fist clenched tight and singing with his eyes closed in overwhelming emotion... "looking for a hearrrrt beeeaaattttt" This gets a 2, just because I kind of giggled at the imagery the song brought up...
Am I going to have to buy Squeezing Out Sparks just to upload songs from it or will someone with the cd get off their behind and do it?
