If I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

If I were roy rogers
I'd sure enough be single
I couldn't bring myself to marrying old dale
It'd just be me and trigger
We'd go riding through them movies
Then we'd buy a boat and on the sea we'd sail

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

The mystery masked man was smart
He got himself a tonto
'cause tonto did the dirty work for free
But tonto he was smarter
And one day said kemo sabe
Kiss my ass I bought a boat
I'm going out to sea

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

And if I were like lightning
I wouldn't need no sneakers
I'd come and go wherever I would please
And I'd scare 'em by the shade tree
And I'd scare 'em by the light pole
But I would not scare my pony on my boat out on the sea

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

I discovered this song in the series 'From'. Recommended ;)
Lyle Lovett is one of the first "old country singers" that I realized I liked. The first of many fortunately. I still remember thinking, "how can someone that funny looking, singing such spare melodies, make such beautiful music!" (Sorry Lyle, I was a young teenager then.)
Currently Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt are on tour, performing and telling stories about their 40-year friendship. Definitely worth seeing. I saw them in Napa, CA last Sunday (Nov. 6th) and it was a great show. And LL did a wonderful version of this song.
My favorite Lyle song and that says a lot, I'm a huge fan.

If I had a boat by Lyle Lovett is a masterpiece!  It speaks to the dichotomy of life, and the Human experience.  I can’t believe how many people don’t understand it, and I completely understand why most people don’t understand it’s meaning.  What a fragile unpredictable adventure we undertake with every step!  My understanding of the meaning of this song is absolutely correct, and possibly at the same time completely wrong.  Thank you Lyle Lovett!

I once heard an interview with or about Irving Caesar, who wrote "Tea For Two" in 1924. Back then lyricists would typically spit out non-sense lyrics just to get the  melody worked out and then refine the final lyrics from there. In the case of "Tea For Two", the "non-sense" lyrics worked.

When I first heard "If I Had A Boat", this story came to mind. To this day I'm not convinced it's not the case. I expect Lyle would tell you it means whatever you want it to mean.

Supper Bowl? Mmmmmm... ;-)
I first heard this song live at the Winnipeg Folk Festival... still the best moment I can remember... Besides my girlfriend at that time (whom still holds a special place in my heart) although that romance ended that fall.
Meaningless Drivel.  USA soft rock at its worse.
The lyrics make perfect sense...
I thought I couldn't love this song any more than I already do, but this version is lovely. I've seen him sing it live several times and it's a transporting moment every time.

Artistic license! He didn't get anything extra for the dirty work!
I just love LL’s tone, the whimsical words, the pace, the casual relaxed atmosphere, the carefree style and solid musicianship across the track. Thanks RP
Pretty sound!

Does FOX have a radio station .... off you go
Thank you for playing this song today at this moment.  Perfect glimpse of a summer past, at a concert, in a field, under the stars, enjoying a live performance of Lyle Lovett and his big band.
i have been in and out of country music all my life
from Hank to Willie and a lot in between
when i heard there was this new country guy coming up i was interested
until i heard some Lyle Lovett music
he was a 1980's hipster's idea of what country is

Stopped dead in tracks.  Volume up.  Feet on desk.  {#Meditate}

Songs are like poetry folks, not all the words have to make sense to everyone.  They make sense to me and it is one fine song.  I fell in love with it when it was background music as people filed into the hall while I was waiting for an Alison Krauss concert to begin.  Great evening of music.
So many people posting that this is a stupid song, and that the lyrics don't make any sense. Well, I'm sure that they made sense to the 10-ish year old boy from the 1950s who is clearly the narrator of the song.

Still like this one ....

It's good to see that you've applied what little brain power you have towards hating on this song.  Stupid is as stupid does.

It is.  And I'll give it a 9 if for lyrics only.

First time I've heard this on RP!!!  (I think.)  An amazing album, from a guy who has a lot of gray matter under that mop of curly hair.

edit:  Thought this was the studio version, from Pontiac, released in 1987.

Not sure about Peter's and Jesse's, but I could tell Lyle's voice immediately. Couldn't tell you why, except maybe I've been listening to (and enjoying) Lyle's music for ages.

It's the dumbest song I've ever heard.
I like how Bill played it out past the riotous applause.  So surreal ... who could love that song that much besides the groupies?  That DQ guy narrating the "not good enough" commercial makes more sense than the lyrics in this insipid song.

i am a huge fan of radio paradise.
A pony on a boat - a ludicrous proposition, and yet he makes it sound plausible....the mark of a true artist.
I met Lyle on a plane ride from LA to Dallas years back. He sat across from me if first class of course. He was a really nice guy. Long live Lyle Lovett..( =
Lyle Lovett has the most amazing speaking voice.
One song you don't like and you go away?  Don't the the bittorrent hit you on the way out.

friend: Jim, why are you crying?
me: I just turned on Radio Paradise for the first time in like two months, i was so looking forward to it.
friend: and you're crying from happiness?
me: < wailing >
friend: what?
me: Bill's playing that #$()Q($Q Pony Boat Song. First thing i heard. Now i gotta go away again.
friend: < shrug > Bittorrent?

nothing but big love for this one
I feel like these last two songs were played just for me. This is my all-time favorite Lyle song, and Annie Lennox's Waiting in Vain is a 10 in my book. What a nice little two-fer.

Knowing Lovett's body of work I think this is perfectly in character for him. Lots of his songs have an element of the silly in them. That said I do like the idea of TMBG singing a cover of this.

Perhaps you should look at a lot of the lyrics for the songs played here.  Music is supposed to get an emotional reaction.  If you want great writing, then read a book.    I bet if we looked up the lyrics for songs that you gave a 8, 9 and 10 rating to, we would find some of those lyrics would be just as 'lame' as the words to this song.  But I love the emotional pull of this song.  Great song to relax to.

Lyle Lovett should be in the Stuff White People Like list, so they can say they like some country music.

Or like Mick Jagger? (who never finished a syllable in his life). Actually, a vocal coach I had once explained how you can sometimes downplay 'p's and 't's at the end of words (replacing them with 'b's and 'd's, or just breathing them instead) in some softer songs. Harder consonants can produce a rhythm of their own that you may not want.
This gives new meaning to poop deck.

Ya gotta Lovett! I prefer the studio version of this, personally, but to experience this song live is wonderful nonetheless. I rate an 8 for the live version, a 10 for the studio version.
