There was a Joe
Leanin' on the back door
A couple Jills with their eyes on a couple bills
Their eyes was statin'
They was waitin'
To get their hands on some easy money

They flipped a dime
One said " well, I'll take heads this time"
One stepped up
One stepped back
One loosened her shoulder strap
She couldn't speak,
Her knees got weak
She could almost taste that easy money

There was this old black cat
Sittin' in a old black cadillac
The Joe smelled sweet
She curled up at her boyfriend's feet
She said "I got a plan
Listen, Sam, how'd ya like to make some easy money ? "
He say, "yes! oh yes!
Jus' tell me what you want me to do "
She said, "Baby, you can trust me
Baby, but you must be hidin' in my room
At a quarter to two"
Well, the cat told the boy
"Come up to the room and play with my toy"
But the Jill set the bait
And she wasn't gonna sit around and wait
But this guy was wise to all the lies
And he flies out the door
With the easy money

Because there ain't no man
Who got the money in his hand
Who got any of that bread
Bein' slow in the head
The easier it looks
The hotter it hooks
There ain't no such thing as easy money
We say, "yes! oh yes!"
Saturday night
There was a terrible, terrible fight
Between two dames who was losin' the same game
It wasn't clear,
But I hear somebody was lookin' for some easy money

Thought of about 2004. Boy, I missed that much the first time! It sounds much younger than it is. I dunno if that's overall quality or some kind of joyfulness present here.
Saw her at Old Man Rivers in Avondale, LA in 1979.

Great opening band, and then she came out and sang lead. Awesome set.

Old Man Rivers was 'da place in those days. They were booking acts that 6 months later were national names. John Prine, The Police, Red Rockers, etc, etc,
GOOD TUNE!  Great voice. Great sounding upright bass.  Thanx RP!

You know, RLJ doen'st normally "do" it for me.
Just a mis-match in styles-much the same way that I respect both her and Dylan, but don't really 'get' them.
This, on the other hand, just hooks me. Don't know why, just a solid, happy roll with it thing.
Nice.

Often Bill is too subtle for me. Sometimes a full-frontal is helpful for those of us are not paying full attention.

Perhaps some Pink Floyd would be an obvious addition to the list? Too obvious?

Too Pink Floyd already.

How about King Crimson? Ultra-obvious, would be my guess.

It's as much of a song as any blues song ...
Outstanding!
Smooth jazz rifts. Love her crooning in the Chicago tone - 11/10
Um, Bill back announced this as Nora Jones ...
Oh god she's making me melt instantly.
Pirates is an excellent album and The Magazine has some gems on it as well. Have not connected as much with her albums since those three.

Ask Orson Welles about "peaking" with one's debut work.  Well...you can't because he's dead, but still...you likely know what I mean.
Speaking of Orson Welles, there's this classic.

They dated for a while but I don't think they ever recorded any music together.  As mentioned further down in the thread, Lowell George did a version of this song before this release.

Those who can, do; those that can't, blog.
oh goodness this song gave me a fit. chicken and egg question, what came first, easy money or jimmy jazz? {#Cowboy}
Well, this record was used to demo stereos back in the day. Bcuz it was a good recording.  Not much there elsewise, maybe the Texaco song.

IMO the worst act played on RP.. suited more for eliciting confessions from terrorists..
Might have been interesting to hear this with King Crimson's "Easy Money".

A little bit of Rickie Lee Jones goes a long way. Whenever I listen to this album, I appreciate the individual tracks a lot less because they all sound similar. So it's really nice to hear this out of context.

Or did you mean, "She sounds like Jewel when I'm drunk"?  I already know what that sounds like.
Yes and from 1979! What a gal.

Annoying in 1979, annoying today.
Had the vinyl when it first came out. Instant heart-throb! Still love it, the whole album's strong,IMHO!
she's come a long way, gone thru a lot of changes, but she's always been brilliant. apparently, she was in the studio, and someone walked past and, hearing her sing, commented that he couldn't understand a word she was singing, but, man, it was some beautiful.
Rickie is a perfectionist, saw her last weekend at SF Jazz. She didn't quite like what her band was doing to a number and made them play it from the start. Love her!
Gets a +1 boost for happy memories of listening to my mom's LP as a child...

Such great memories.  Thank you Bill, havent heard this album in decades.
I like the song because I love Lowell George so much.
I assumed she was covering it, but I just discovered she wrote it.
He covered it.
She's been around for a while I guess.

I disagree - it's a story song that's delightfully wicked. The way the thing progresses from two women trying to rip off a guy to the guy flying out the door with their "easy money," and the subsequent cat fight... Oh, it's great.  And I agree - she does it right.  Always.{#Bounce}

Oh gawd YES!!!! and Company...
Adenoids can obstruct the nasal airway enough to affect the voice without actually stopping nasal airflow altogether, according to Wikipedia. I'm just saying is all.
Could just be me, but I first thought this was an early recording of Poe. Reminds me of Fingertips a lot.
I WANT to like Rickie Lee. I really do. But this ain't helpin'. Maybe it's because I DO like Tom Waits...

Yeh, it's cool, but the original by the late great Lowell George is the one to check out.
Hmmmm ... I always thought this was the original and Lowell's was the cover. In any case, I never cared for this song at all until I heard Lowell do it. This version here I could do without. Edit: Okay, I checked and the Lowell George version of this song, written by Jones, is the original (1978). The Jones "cover" of her own tune appeared in 1979. 1978 ... 1979 ... it's hard to keep it all straight nowadays.
Her new album sounds like she found Jesus. Don't buy it if you don't like that preachy overtone.

Ricky Lee... quite the enigmatic and interesting artist, nice to hear this original version. I\'m far more familiar with Lowell George\'s cover of it. Speaking of which, Bill, might you visit some of Lowell\'s solo album here on RP?
