It's strange. There is a lot of support politically for some action, but there is little support among the legislators (and a good number of their vocal supporters) to give anyone a 'win'. So we continue to do stupid things.   I don't get it. I look around and I feel that these are not my people. I can't understand the beliefs, actions, fears, drive of so many.

I do wonder about those living in the declining decades of Rome. After the division, when there were two emperors, did the people go 'Well that was great, what now?'. I mean, did they see it coming. Will our society fail in a single event, or will we wake up one day with news of President Trump of the Florida colonies, and find out that Mexico has taken back Texas and vast portions of the Southwest?

Hmmm....  Why the worry?  If they have not been vaccinated, will they be allowed into the country?

And if they are somehow allowed in, what do they fear?  Being hog-tied and forcibly vaccinated?  Unlikely, given the fear of military invasion.

As far as I know, there's no (incoming) discretionary travel (tourism) anyway.

Gun sales were stratospheric during the Obama years. The Pandemic sales surge was unrelated to the pandemic, IMO, it was because as noted, elections always bring the bogeyman (I typed bokeyman) the spectre of a Democrat being president and as we all know, they will take your guns. The paper I work for does a brisk trade in classified and display ads for person-to-person sales, and yes they're usually selling in one issue. Ammo is available in large quantities but it's been harder to buy just a box.

It's possible (I clearly haven't read the article) that people are doubling up and saying Fauci is going to also take their guns, but I haven't heard much chatter locally about the pandemic being the reason for the panic. It's Joe. He's a-gonna get 'em.

A local gun dealer here retired when Trump was elected. Sold the store and just quit. He'd made a bundle over 8 years and knew that gravy train was over (for at least 4 years).

Preliminary research data show that about a fifth of all Americans who bought guns last year were first-time gun owners. Sales usually spike around elections, but the sheer volume is notable.

It is a real bummer reading the comments of that NYT article.   So many Americans want to leave their country, so many are counselling their children to leave the USA.

Shooting and homicides are up.  Check.

Does this mean that gun suicides and domestic 'accidents' will go up too?

The current Liberal government of Canada wants to increase immigration from what are already the highest net immigration rates among rich countries.   As Canadian immigrants tend not to integrate very well and first generation descendants appear to suffer similar problems, will Canadian targeted and drive-by shootings in Greater Vancouver and Greater Toronto also go up?

In the not so distant past, one could avoid criminal violence by staying away from specific neighbourhoods, especially during specific times of the day.  Will that still be possible going forward?

More than half of mass shootings in recent years involve a perpetrator who killed an intimate partner or family member, including the gunman who killed six people in Colorado Springs.

Gun-related domestic killings increased by 26 percent from 2010 to 2017, according to a 2019 study by Emma E. Fridel and James Alan Fox. In 2017, 926 of the 1,527 women killed by partners were killed with guns, the study found.

jiggz and rgio,

Read through your exchange with great interest.   I tend to agree with most of what rgio said.  Hand guns should be limited to law enforcement, military and other trained professionals.  That category includes private security guards.

My view is not one based in some kind of righteousness but rather expected net benefit analysis.   Example, I was standing right beside you jiggz while you kicked the crap out of the B&E artist.  I might have even offered to hold him for you.

Then I might have suggested another approach not because I cared about the B&E criminal but because I cared about you the victim and potential future victims.   So I might have suggested a slightly less brutal way to subdue and detain the alleged B&E criminal.  One that still imposed some ....err...  'costs' on the person that broke into your home.

jiggz:  On the one hand, I feel for you.   On the other hand, I have to ask.  If the crime rates were so high, why did you not move?

Once upon a time, my wife and I were in a somewhat similar situation.  Getting the police to fix the problem did not work.  The RCMP spent lots of time observing the then 17-year old gang banger but never enforced the release conditions.   We eventually recognized that the only way to resolve that kind of situation was to move.

In passing, sometime after we had the young banger evicted and we moved out, he and a couple friends committed a B&E looking for a grow-op.  A 97-year old Chinese women came towards them leaning on a walker.  They thought the walker was a weapon (they had been drinking booze and left fingerprints on broken pieces of bottle), swept it out from under her and proceeded to kick the crap out of her. They broke her hip.

Rosie Leung had her life ruined because enlightened folks think it is OK for juveniles to commit ugly, violent crimes.

Previously, the 17-year old gang banger was asked to turn down the music, did not, and then the noise complaint morphed into a search & seizure of a shot gun, a rifle, a large calibre hand gun, shells, proceeds and a couple keys of grow-rip weed (yuck....) .  The judge let him out a day later and he immediately got on the smartphone and started bragging to all his buddies.

Poor guy, he had a mild-case of FASD and total dirt-bags for parents (both were alcohol, tobacco and cocaine addicts, the father did hard time for assault, the mother abandoned her teenage children several times.  The youngest, the gang banger with FASD was well known to the local RCMP.

After an almost 5 year stint in prison minus time served, he was arrested for DUI.  I fully expect to read of him murdering somebody in the near future.  Acute attention deficit disorder prevents him from learning anything useful.  But that does not mean that society should stop protecting innocent civilians from these human garbage/monsters.

Incidentally, I reckon this experience actually hands me a de facto license to kill here in BC if I was ever in a tight spot again.  The police are simply not reliable.  Whether that is actually true or not, I do not care as I am pre-committed to preservation of life and well-being (mine and/or others) and will deal with police and the justice system at a later date.  I can't show up in court if I am dead.
