Presidents just don't have that much power over the economy. Besides, these kind of gyrations in the stock market as well as 1-2 year forecasts of the economy are disturbing to large corporations and the very rich. It wouldn't surprise me if they start pouring money into Democratic SuperPACs to sweep out the orange-haired source of instability and uncertainty.

You don't f&$ck with people's wealth. They will fight back. I don't see how Trump can convince intelligent wealth-holders and investors that the Dems are to blame.

Trump is flailing. He's bouncing back and forth between policy positions and there isn't even a scandal or controversy that he needs to distract people from. Right now he's coming across as a panicky, frightened mess.

Nice spin.  I don't think so....

The Danish are openly mocking the US president.  The 'Stately professionals' continue to behave as 'stately professionals'.   The USA did not invent tabloid journalism.  (Or did it?)  Suffice to say that Europe enjoyed a full range of newspapers and tabloids long before Donald Trump arrived on the scene to MAGA!

Describing Trump's out-of-the-blue proposal to buy Greenland as 'absurd' is accurate.  (I can read a little Danish.)  This is the Theatre of the Absurd.

You might be right that Trump does this to distract from other issues.  Then again, perhaps he explodes into righteous anger to simply appease his base and to give them somebody new to demonize?

At the end of the day, President Donald Trump appears as arrogant, disrespectful and thin-skinned as ever.    He seems incapable of discussing a policy idea without making it personal, without denigrating and otherwise disrespecting individuals or entire populations.

By now, I believe it is more than safe to argue that the vast majority of Nordic folk view Trump as a pompous clown.  The exception would be for those who subscribe to white nationalism.    There are probably a few a anti-Jewish white ethno-nationalists still  lingering  about in the North.

If you were wealthy, but knew that the next administration would help fix what's broken now, you'd want to intentionally drive everything into the dumper so as to buy it for a discount. Why make things more expensive for you and your friends/cronies/business associates? It's temporary, so they'll tolerate you trashing the nation while they wait for the bottom to buy, and reap the rewards in a few years during recovery.

Remember that this has been the pattern in the past decades: Bush tanks it (people buy cheap), Clinton repairs it. Bush tanks it, Obama repairs it. Now, Trump tanks it...and the checkbooks are about to come out. Who cares if he's re-elected if he's managed to put the country at a discount in just one term. Best. President. Ever!

He's already blaming Jay Powell - who he appointed (and whose name he misspelled is his initial tweet).

Trump sees all U.S. Jews as Israelis because his Christian Zionist allies do, too
We are not temporarily dislocated Israelis, and despite what Trump’s Jew-turned-evangelical-Christian friend says about the president’s theological status, our God has only ever come once. Suggesting that our loyalty and our vote should be determined only by the geopolitics of another country, thousands of miles away, requires the erasure of centuries of American Jewish life, from the Jews who won the right to vote with the promulgation of the Bill of Rights onward, with no destination in mind but the “golden land” America was supposed to be.

Trump’s fixation on an impossibly minute sector of the U.S. electorate — Jews make up slightly less than 2 percent of the U.S. population — seems puzzling, at first. The community writ large has proved remarkably resistant to his outreach; 7 in 10 Jewish Americans vote for the Democratic Party, and that figure shows no signs of shifting.

But the series of bizarre statements Trump made about Jews this week do a lot to clarify why the president appears to be pressing for the Jewish vote. Assailing a minuscule, politically left-wing ethnic group under the guise of right-wing outreach makes a lot more sense when you realize it was never really about, or for, American Jews at all. Trump’s appeals both reflect and attempt to reach a different population entirely, one much more likely to talk about the second coming of God or anoint a King in Israel: evangelical Christians.

Christian Zionism — specifically, the millenarian eschatology that has gained significant popularity on the evangelical right in recent decades — is a potent force in U.S. domestic and foreign policy. The strongest  supporters of an uncritical, anti-Palestinian foreign policy are white evangelical Christians — the most politically mobilized segment of the president’s base. Their support for Israel is grounded in the Book of Revelation, which dictates that Israel must be “restored” to the Jews before the Jews convert en masse, redeeming themselves for having once rejected Jesus. This redemption comes in fire, and at the cost of complete erasure of any distinct Jewish identity; it is a hallmark of the end of history, a time of tribulation that will exterminate the faithless.

The bipartisan sacrality of Israel in American discourse, in which even  the mildest criticism of the state is treated as a third-rail issue, has far less to do with the delicate sensibilities of a tiny (if loud) Jewish minority than with this strain of Christian theology. This has been true since the efflorescence of Christian Zionist preaching on the religious right in the 1980s, dispensed by figures such as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. But Trump has once more displayed his gift at saying the quiet part aloud. It takes a bold man to pull back the curtain on evangelical, Bible-based foreign policy and declare himself King of  Israel.  There is some strong evidence that America is not voluntarily sharing tech with China.

  1. Google was founded in 1998. Baidu “the Google of China" was founded in January 2000, Beijing, China.
  2. Microsoft was founded on April 4, 1975, Albuquerque, NM. Tencent “the Microsoft of China" was founded in November 1998.
  3. WhatsApp was founded in 2009. WeChat “the WhatsApp of China” was founded in October 2010.
  4. Amazon was founded on July 5, 1994. Alibaba “the Amazon of China” was founded in April 1999, in Hangzhou, China.
  5. YouTube was founded on February 14, 2005. Youku “the YouTube of China" was founded in March 2006.
  6. Facebook was founded in February 2004, Cambridge, MA. Renren “the Facebook of China' was founded in December 2005.
  7. Twitter was founded on March 21, 2006, San Francisco, CA. Weibo “the Twitter of China" was founded in August 2009.
  8. Apple was founded on April 1, 1976, Cupertino, CA. Xiaomi “the Apple of China" was founded in April 2010, Yingu Mansion, Beijing, China.
  9. AT&T was founded on October 5, 1983, Delaware. China Mobile LTD “the AT&T of China" was founded in September 1997.
  10. Ford was founded on June 16, 1903, Detroit, MI. FAW “the Ford of China" was founded in July 1953.

The technology agreements are part of establishing nexus in China for manufacturing and access to the local markets.   The internet companies you listed above generally have firewall issues with Chinese consumers.  If you won't let folks use new technologies, copy those technologies and allow them monitored use inside the firewall.   The tech companies don't share their technology with anyone...China is no different.

The theft of US IP comes when you can buy exact replicas of products made to the same specifications without any compensation for the inventor, who decided it was better to make short term profits with low-cost labor than to protect their trade secrets and lose market share to the competition...who were in China.  China didn't become the leader in solar technology by creating the industry, they took US IP, invested billions in cheap labor and research, and destroyed the companies that seeded the industry but could no longer compete.  There are US manufacturers, but even with the 30% tariff, they struggle to compete.  The result is higher solar costs for everyone and more fossil fuel usage.  Complex problems that can't be solved by one person with a tweet.

If you did not know:

The anti-Chinese  rhetoric coming out of many corners of the USA  is similar in nature to the anti-Jewish rhetoric that was popular in the early part of the 20th century.

Any everyone shops at Walmart and Amazon, yet complains that small business and Main Street are dying.

People don't really care about Chinese policy, they care about their own well being.  A huge part of that is jobs, and with all of the manufacturing gone overseas (to support lower prices that all Americans like) someone needs to be blamed.  Can't blame myself, so we'll blame the Chinese.

To your point about the corporate movements, there are now some industries where you have no choice but to manufacture / source from/in China.   Entire supply chains for US companies are in China.  It's a huge 30-year problem that even the chosen one can't fix quickly.  Tweeting the idea du jour about how to fix it only makes it worse.
