Crazy day in free agent signings ahead of the collective bargaining agreement expiring. Scherzer went to the Mets, and Gausman went to the Blue Jays after apparently turning down a better offer from the Mets. Hoping the Giants scouting/computer has some more scrap heap arms in their sights...

In Water-is-Wet news, Gabe Kapler is NL Manager of the Year. John Madden used to say the manager who won the Series or the Super Bowl is by definition the manager of the year. There's something to that, but not this year. I don't remember watching any game and thinking "that's absolutely the wrong move." Some were interesting, some didn't work out, but they almost always made sense.

Wouldn't surprise me if the BoSox try to woo Kapler after Alex Cora moves on. Kapler was very popular here as a reserve player and the front office really liked him as its Single A manager.

I don't understand the mechanics of the amateur part he references, and this doesn't indict Atlanta nearly as much as it does, say, the Cubs (this year's top tanker, I think), who abandoned any pretext of trying to win every game and let so many players go.

I will say that Joe Buck earned his paycheck this year. Kept up an admirable tone of enthusiasm throughout. Vin Scully would have been "ah, fuggit" after the 2nd 3-run inning and started telling stories.

So I’m going to see how the game goes tonight and then I’ll go out on a limb and predict if this will go 7 games. {#Think}

I watched the Braves as a kid in Milwaukee (Hank Aaron, Warren Spahn, Eddie Matthews, etc). Plus I am a National League fan prone to root for that league’s entry in the World Series unless I like a particular narrative for the American League entry. I do like Dusty Baker from his time as manager of the Nationals, but that is not enough.  And, oh, yeah, the Astros lineup is still littered with players from The Garbage Can Beaters and Cheaters.
.
There you have it. Go Braves!

Disappointing outcome... the Sox just didn't have any more runs in them and seemed to have lost the ability to play the game that got them that far. I think the Dodgers might have hit a wall too. We'll see. Bullpen game tonight.

Worst case scenario going in was a Braves/Astros series. Ugh.

Ugh.

It was fun. The Sox weren't supposed to do anything this year but played quite well in the first half. They stumbled and bumbled in the second but caught fire for a while in the playoffs...

I'd like to see what the owners and management do in the off-season. Do they go into win-now mode or stick to the slow re-build?
