I've watched a lot of bad calls from the plate umpires lately, with Blue Jays games. Something about the umpire looking over the shoulder of the catcher and not getting a good look for throws on the opposite side of the plate.

That chart is wrong. I just went back to that inning with MLB.TV. That 3rd strike was outside, not inside. Should have been a ball, regardless.

That is the bases loaded bottom of the 4th K that Ian Happ ejected leaving us to struggle on Happlessly.  Number 8 is the called third strike.

So owing to a last minute cancellation we wound up taking my driver's roommate to the game last Thursday.  The roommate had never been much of a baseball fan, but as I'm sure RD would tell you if you're going to try to live with a Cubs fan it's probably easiest to just to become a Cubs fan.   At any rate we were getting him to his very first major league game which is something that always gives an extra sense of accomplishment.  An important part of going to the bleachers getting there as soon as the gates open so we had plenty of time to point out some of the parks nicer features, discuss its history and in general regale with all manner of Wrigley lore.  I wound up telling him about a game I went to a few years back with triskele along with her dragon, sister, and brother in law.  Owing to their geographical advantage her sister and brother in law are far more seasoned Wrigley vets than yours truly and on that day they taught me a trick I never would have thought possible.  Once the game goes into extras and all the beer has been shut off they let all the guards that keep the bleachers and main stands separate go home.  It becomes possible to escape the relentless sun of the bleachers and spend an inning or two in the shade of the upper deck.  This was just a few years after the Cubs finally jacked up the price of bleacher seats to the point where they don't all sell out within the first few hours they go on sale.   Something that pissed me off at first, but in retrospect it's what has allowed me to become almost exclusively a bleacher creature.   Being full time bleachers though it had been two or three years since I had seen Woo Woo who tends to spend most of his time in the main stands.  Woo Woo is actually older than me and by more than a decade and like many of us I imagine I'm starting to fear that sad day on the horizon when Wrigley will have to go on without him.  Finding myself in the main stands again and in the presence of a  a couple of alpha fans I asked them if Woo Woo was still making it to games.  Being alpha fans though they too were bleachers only and didn't really know either.  But then in less than ten minutes who should saunter by to answer our question but the man himself.  It got even better though a year or two later when I got my brother to come in for a Giants game and told him the story.  At the time he had no idea who Woo Woo was which I imagine is pretty common among Cubs fans that don't get to the park that often.  Fortunately though as we were leaving there he was again in front of Harry's statue celebrating the win and posing for fans' selfies.  So now he does know.  Anyway after telling our new little rookie all of this I added "so now that I've told you the story we'll probably see him on the way out".  As it turned out though we didn't have to wait that long.  Middle of the fifth he came walking down the aisle, got a seat at the end of our row, and hung out in our little section for the rest of the game.  I'm so glad my friend Al was there all three times to back me up on this.  I've come to believe Woo Woo may be even more magical than Javy.

God's honest truth, that was the first observation we made when we got to our seats.  Although knowing better than to anger the baseball gods not that the Cubs were going to win, just that with the wind coming in as strong as it was and Hendrlcks and he whose name must not be spelled on the mound it was going to end up one zip and the chances for someone scoring a run for Jeffy in Wrigley were practically nil.   You know Wrigley is old timey cozy little park where you're almost down on the field.  Sometimes when a visiting player comes in who you're not real familiar with there can be some awkward silences.  It was nice that Pillar had such a rough day.   We had plenty to talk to him about.
