A clot too far: An embalmer dissects antivax misinformation about blood clots in Died Suddenly
Two weeks ago, COVID-19 conspiracy theorist Stew Peters released an antivax pseudodocumentary, Died Suddenly, whose main claim is that COVID-19 vaccines cause clots that have caused a massive wave of people to “die suddenly”. Key to its narrative are embalmers claiming that they are seeing more clots in the bodies they are embalming than ever before. SBM has recruited Benjamin Schmidt, an experienced embalmer, to dissect their claims.

Yeah. There are people who need a kidney (I know one) who are willing to follow general medical advice. Refusing to do what experts tell you to do make you a horrible recipient for a kidney. People have studied for decades what it takes for the transplant to be successful. You don't get to watch some YouTube voodoo cretins and come in and demand otherwise. Make a grownup's decision, not an ill-informed teenager's.

FTA: â€œWe do not have medical freedom or religious freedom anymore,” Chrissy Hicks told National File in reaction to the conference call conversation.
This is a delusion on the part of the parents, trying to reframe themselves as champions of their version of "freedom." There is no such concept as "medical freedom" to begin with. There is science and recommendations and medical staff who refuse to waste a transplant procedure on someone when there are better candidates. And there are better candidates.

Second, folding in that they don't have "religious freedom" is just hysterical bullshit. They can do whatever ever they want until it affects others. And I'd contend that in a situation where there are people needing kidneys and they want to take one under suboptimal and correctable conditions - they're just being selfish, and denying someone else a good kidney when it's available. That has absolutely nothing to do with religion or freedom.

Grr. You can tell this hits a hot button with me. Not sorry.

Solid organ transplant recipients who are receiving immunosuppressive therapy should be considered to be at increased risk for severe COVID-19. Initial reports of transplant recipients who were hospitalized with COVID-19 suggest mortality rates of up to 28%.

Transplant recipients may also have a higher risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 given their frequent contact with the health care system.

I think it is the risk of getting covid shortly before or after the operation being far greater than the risk from the vaccine. People are notoriously bad at evaluating risk and usually place a far greater emphasis on risks from taking action vs risks from doing nothing.

Certainly the risk from not sucking it up and getting the transplant are greater than the risks of the vaccine.

I'm sure the hospital is trying to direct scarce transplant resources to the patients they think have the best chance of a positive outcome. Unfortunate but fair enough.
