when can we have slim whitman nominated/inducted?
he practically invented western yodel rock and inspired george harrison, paul mccartney, rob zombie and maybe weird al yankovic

Slim was a one of a kind for sure. Love that guy. Also he was Andy Kaufmans favorite singer...

There's a venn diagram of about 478 circles, where many of them overlap is possibly very definitely likely to be acknowledged as rock music but some of them only overlap by a hair and they're rock classics.

The hall of fame clearly has a very broad definition of "rock and roll" - that debate ship sailed long ago.  Anyhow, there are a number of "country" artists who have been inducted: Johnny Cash, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, Floyd Cramer, Chet Atkins, etc..  There is little or no logic to their decisions and it seems to be driven more by which inductees would sell the most tickets to the dinner ceremony than any other "logical" reasons.  They have no real mandate, it's just the personal tastes of several non-musicians.

...The basic premise of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame already feels a little outdated post-MTV, and the lines between genres only get blurrier from here on out. It’s perhaps a little reductive, too, to give the exact same honour to such disparate acts – are NWA really reaching for the same thing as Deep Purple?
At best this comes across as an earnest attempt to court a younger generation, at worst it’s redefining what “rock ’n’ roll” is to suit its own needs, even when those words have really already gained new meaning.

He's a country artist... no argument.  My original list below is who I'd bet gets in, not who I think should get in.

Zevon as a performer and composer. Maybe not enough mass commercial appeal. He was influential, though, and unique.

Willie Nelson obviously legendary, but I was wondering the same as you did about genre.

If you scroll through and look at some who've been made members it is kind of hard to believe a few are on the list.
