Aye.  That's Edie Adams with Dorothy Provine and Ethel Merman from "It's A Mad, Mad World".  It looks like they were goofing around between takes in front of "the Big W".

I read that in Jimmy Durante's voice.

I think it's funny that these marketing people needed to do research to determine that people don't want to hear the same 20 songs repeated 5-6 times a day ...i.e. what you get on radio now.

Frikkin' geniouses.

CNN.com wrote:

A radio was blasting when Howard Kroeger, director of operations and programming for CHUM Broadcasting's Winnipeg stations, arrived at his friend's 40th-birthday bash. It was a competitor's classic rock station, and Kroeger used the occasion to conduct an informal focus group among the partygoers, most in their mid- to late 30s. Whenever Boston, the Cars, Meatloaf, Supertramp or some other '70s staple came on, it got an overwhelming thumbs-up from the Molson-enhanced crowd. But there was a noticeable lack of enthusiasm when Jimi Hendrix, the Animals, the Doors or other '60s icons played. While the crowd dug connecting with music from their high school years, Kroeger noticed the station wasn't playing a lot of other acts his generation grew up with, like the Pretenders, Elvis Costello, Soft Cell and Tears for Fears. With the help of Mike Dorn from Audience Research International, Kroeger made a format montage from the song list and had it tested during a CHUM strategic study. "It came back that the hole was absolutely huge," Kroeger recalls. Variety is the name of the game, seemingly mimicking the iPod Shuffle campaign in its quest for odd juxtapositions of style and genre.
The one common denominator is that these songs were all hits.

Non-niche radio is becoming the new niche"">(click here)

Closer, but the key problem here, to me, is the last sentance. They're still playing it safe by relying on old Billboard definable "Hits". The key to real radio is the interaction the listener feels by knowing that they can expect to hear everything from the most tried-and-true hits to their personal favorite, obscure, album tracks. Sure, I like 'Band On The Run' but when was the last time you heard 'Lunch Box-Odd Sox'? on the radio for instance. They're trying to figure out how to compete with satalite and web radio because they're taking away more and more listeners everyday. Until they grow some onions and have on-sight staff choosing the songs they broadcast based on what people in the local comunity want to hear, they they will continue to lose the fight. At least, with any luck, they will. Hopefully this is a sign that radio listeners are not the total sheep that marketing companies have convinced corporate broadcasting giants they are.
