 Well the forecast for Chicago this afternoon is mostly sunny with highs in the upper 60s and the Cardinals are coming back to Wrigley.   You probably can guess where I'll be today.  See you all tomorrow.

Kimbrel was looking for something like a 6-year deal from the Sox but they weren't ever going to give that to him. The team is up against the payroll limit—is over the first limit in fact, which caused the team to forfeit its 1st-round draft pick. It could also be that the Sox thought Kimbrel was likely to decline from his peak...I dunno.

Apparently Keuchel and Kimbrel were on the market for so long because teams didn't want to give up a compensatory draft pick to the two players' teams from last year. The time limit for that obligatory draft pick compensation expired recently.

...Aaand the Bruins lost 2-1 tonight so their backs are against the wall in the series, 3-2.    {#Arghhh}

There was no way the Sox or as it turns out anyone was going to pay his asking price. $43mil for 3 years, really 2.5, is pretty fair for both sides.

The Bruins played well, but Binnington was a brick wall. Too bad the refs couldn’t recognize a blatant trip right before the game winning goal.

He’s 31 and arrives with a HOF resume. He’s a Top 5 closer easy rest of the season and probably for the next two years. For the past 9 years he has the most K, saves and lowest ERA of any reliever.
Throw out the late season struggles last year, he had a lot besides baseball on his mind. Missed most of spring training due to his 2 year old daughter having heart surgery...
You can probably lose the “cautiously”, we have as big a shitshow bullpen as the Cubs and I’d have been ecstatic to get him back. Too much money needing to go to too many guys in the next couple years prevented it.

This is baseball.  You can't be optimistic without a cautiously.  Any Red Sox fan over the age of 20 has to be aware of this.

Kimbrel was not trending upwards at the end of last year's regular season or in in the playoffs. He was downright shaky at times. He was light's out during the first half of 2018's regular season FWIW.

 From what I've read, several players and coaches anonymously indicated that he eventually had a "tell".  The "whooping crane" pose apparently wasn't so distracting when batters knew what pitch was coming.  He may have gotten past it by the ALCS but I think Cora lost faith in him and Boston wasn't going to give him the deal he wanted.  The Cubs need a solid reliever though; maybe he's a good fit.

Red Sox beat the Yanks today but are still 8.5 games back. Ouch.

But the Bruins won big last night 7-2 and are up 2-1 in the Stanley Cup finals so there's that...

A long time ago I did a freelance story on a guy that was in charge of security at Wrigley for Cub games.  One of the questions I asked him was along the lines of what days would be the toughest from a security standpoint.  He answered that any game at which there was a giveaway of anything that could be turned into a beer-drinking vessel and any game against the Cardinals!

I'm trying to think if I've ever been to a game with both.   It doesn't seem like they'd be mutually exclusive.  I'm guessing that was so long ago there was no interleague play yet.  These days I think he'd probably say any game against the White Sox or Cardinals.  It's my experience that even though our rivalry with the Cardinals older and more intense than any in baseball and we obviously hate them more the anyone else we are generally remarkably civil about it.   The Sox games though seem to draw a lot of the worst elements from both sides.  I have a baseball up on a shelf that was a White Sox batting practice home run because there just aren't many parents willing to bring their kids out to the bleachers for me to give it to for that game.
