That should put an end to having a dedicated team studying HD video slow-mo, trying to see if the ball was really in the back of the glove before the shadow of the toe passed over the fleck of dirt on the bag... the replay is for fixing obviously-missed calls, not those hair-splitting debates.

Is there a limit on number of challenges? In cricket they get one failed challenge per innings, I think. And your innings can stretch over a couple of days. Which kind of makes you wonder, "what's the hurry?" But if a team is batting for a draw, the fielders want to keep things moving along. I'm a bit surprised in baseball they don't use some of the high tech thermal cameras and sound recording to check foul tips.

The only way additional wild cards work is to have the #3 seed division winner play the #3 wild card and the 1 & 2 wild cards play each other in a one sudden death game. The winners play each other in a second sudden death game. Then to the division series, which has to be 7 games. Whoever comes out of these 2 games is likely to be screwed in pitching, making the DS 7, which is needed anyway, SOMEWHAT levels the pitching playing field. Screw the top 2 teams picking their opponent, that is idiotic.
And for my money, I’d, still be fine with one wild card and the 7 game DS being the initial series.

The longer the postseason, the more meaningless the regular season. It'll be 162 exhibition games and then a round-robin "season" of all the teams that didn't finish below about .450

I was listening to some audiobook and it was saying that if you took the team with the best record (.700) in MLB and the team with the worst (.300), and put them in a best-of-seven series, the .300 team could be expected to win the series a shockingly high number of times. Make it a best-of-nine and they'd still have a good chance. In order to guarantee that the better team won the series, it would have to be a best-of-213 series or something like that. So the long regular season is pretty good at shaking out the best team. The series had more charm before interleague play, and more of a point: If AL/NL never play each other, we don't really know which league champion is better. Introduce more rounds of playoffs, it just doesn't answer the question at all. Exhibit A: SF Giants, 3x World Series Champions. Suck on it.

Well, looks like the Red Sox finally figured out how to do a trade. Now maybe we can focus on how to hire a manager.

Congrats to The Reds, who acquired Pedro Strop from The Cubs! His remarkable consistency at blowing a 3-4 run lead in the 8th will serve them well.

Not quite sure what to make of what they got in return. Verdugo’s young but was sidelined with back issues last year. The pitcher I never heard of and who’s name I already forgot supposedly throws 99 consistently and may be a legit closer candidate. Mookie will be missed but they simply weren’t going 12 years at $35 per, and they did get a couple players back, which wouldn’t have happened if he left as FA at season’s end. This does get them well under the Luxury Tax cap and hopefully they can lock down Devers and Vazquez and pick up a couple more decent players.

That guy is Brusdar Graterol, from the Twins.  Huge upside for the RedSox with this young guy.  Twins are playing for 2020 in this trade.  However, if Graterol becomes a star it will be Big Papi (whom the Twins let go many years back) redux.

Would appreciate MLB wrapping up the investigation into the 2018 Sox any time. It would be nice to hire a manager soon too. Roenike is a top candidate apparently, but was bench coach in 2018 and if anything is found he’ll likely be implicated. So he’s pretty much on hold. Not hearing anything from MLB, read a couple rumors that they aren’t really finding much of anything, so maybe no news is good news who knows...

What I do know is I’m ready for the season to start and have something to talk about other than this shit.

I haven't followed the BoSox closely but their sky-high payroll seems to be hampering any effort to improve the rotation. And then there's the looming question about how to hold onto Mookie Betts long-term.

Yah, we signed 4 no name pitchers and utility guy Jose Peraza, who someone apparently thinks is better than Holt. Cheaper at least. The big contracts that are killing us are Price and Pedroia, around $42 mil this year. And Mookie just got $27 mil in arbitration. I think the only shot we have at keeping him is to first lose the $42 mil. If Pedey retires that’s helpful, and as much as I love the guy I think he should. I’d like to see him as bench coach. Pay him the 12 mil, just clear that roster payroll. Price is a different story, no one will take that contract - unless he‘s included in a Betts trade. Catch 22.

IIRC Sean McAdam had some good pieces over at Boston Sports Journal on BoSox payroll. A great site if you're into Boston teams.

Love this Twitter comment: "Lose-lose situation for Altuve here. Either he's lying, or that's his real laugh."

Here's Ken Rosenthal, who broke the news of the Astros cheating scandal, asking Jose Altuve why he was telling teammates not to rip his jersey off after the walk-off home run in Game 6 of the 2019 ALCS
