JERUSALEM â On Sunday, thousands of ultraorthodox mourners attended two funerals of famous rabbis who died from the coronavirus. I lived in Des Moines in 1975 and there was a guy with a paper towel tube and a can of Pam at a party I was invited to by a co-worker...He would hold the tube to his nose and spray the Pam for about 5 seconds up the tube and then nod out for 15 minutes, wake up, and repeat, and he did it all night long. It was scary.
While in high school I saw a guy soak a rag in paint thinner and put it in a bread bag and huff his way to oblivion...literally. 20 years later I saw his emaciated shell hanging around a Handy Pantry combing the gas pumpers for change. He was one of those tough guys when I was a kid. Scary. Bully. Like many of those sons of blue collar alcoholism where I grew up he likely is long gone and I feel his emptiness when I'm down or feeling weak from or for one reason or another...
