I have the DVD of 'Best Years', but I still watch it whenever it is on TV.  Great movie and it led me to find other movies with Fredric March and Dana Andrews.

Note in 'Best Years', Hoagie Carmichael is the piano player who teaches Homer some tunes. He was a fine actor, and his musical skills really helped sell it. Also see 'To Have and Have Not' for more of his work.

I just checked his bio on Wikipedia. I didn't know he had won so many Academy awards. I guess he's best known for his role in Best Years of Our Lives — what a great a movie about people adjusting to every day life after fighting in WW II.

This is my favorite month of programming on TCM. The station is showing Oscar-nominated films from virtually every awards category. Yesterday morning before I had to go to work, I tuned into Captains Courageous based on the Rudyard Kipling story. It was quite enjoyable, and it was a trip to see a young Spencer Tracy (who won best actor) and an even younger Mickey Rooney (what was he, about 15 when it was filmed?). Fredrick Bartholomew was also excellent as the rich brat who becomes Tracy's pal over the course of a few months on the fishing boat.

I'll be checking the TCM listings regularly this month and will no doubt have to make room on my DVR to record some of these movies. Has anybody else "discovered" a movie they had yet to see before this month's programming?
