Good time to bring up a point of order that he is ineligible due to the "engaged in insurrection". https://talkingpointsmemo.com/...
I must have missed the conviction. Doesn't that charge require a trial and conviction in order to apply ? And an indictment before the trial ?
I would think so at least, but at this point anything is possible.
To the larger point, the current repub leadership is the same as the leadership in the previous Congress and it, led by McConnell with McCarthy in powerless tow, blessed the omnibus spending bill to sail through, essentially leaving the incoming repub house neutered with no power of the purse leverage until the 2024 budget at the end of this year. The leadership sold out the party's leverage. Kinda hard to trust these same people to do anything different, regardless of what they promise.
So yeah, dig in and fight for the ability to have more of a say. Such as who does what on which committee for example. Cuz if they don't, nothing will change. The status quo is not acceptable.
And no, I do not take Gaetz's nomination of Trump as an endorsement for POTUS or anything else. But that is just me.
My take on Gaetz doing that was more self-serving. I agree with you that he's not seriously supporting Trump, but that doesn't mean Trump supporters (a large portion of his base) won't interpret it as support.
Like trump would take a job that requires him to show up for work most days. Can you imagine him trying to follow procedures he doesn't understand?
He can be expelled by a 2/3 vote of The House, which seems unlikely to happen. The most recent expulsions were for representatives convicted of bribery, corruption, and racketeering in one case (Traficant).
It seems to me that Gaetz nominated Trump as a sarcastic comment or joke, especially since Trump emphatically wants McCarthy as Speaker and Gaetz emphatically does not.

If he would have said "this guy shouldn't come to DC", he could have grabbed so much moral high ground by standing for something. Instead, he's being held hostage by 15 (of the 20 who are) election deniers.
He could have gotten some Ds to vote for him just to acknowledge that the GOP won the house and also to totally kneecap him with those hard-core right.

This is an example of where I think McCarthy has made huge mistakes. He didn't say a word, because Santos made it clear he would vote for Kevin. You can't sell your soul for one vote...over and over and over again. He has no soul left to sell at this point.
