We can state with conviction, therefore, that a
man's support for absolute government is in direct proportion to the
contempt he feels for his country.

I couldn't agree more, less government  the better.  Let me know when you find a party  that espouses this notion.
(Hint; it is not Republican and it sure is Hell is not Democrat.)

My friends, we will have to fight for  the return to responsible government and moral, accountable leaders in this country.  I don't mean fighting by violence and terrorism but instead fighting by participating in political campaigns and governments, by speaking out and joining others in those efforts. If you are not speaking out and standing up, you will be ignored and run over.

I urge you to support and push the Democratic party as much as you can. If there are viable third-party and appealing third-party candidates at local and state levels, support them as you see fit. The Republican party is a directionless and morally broken collection of free agents looking to enrich themselves and preserve economic, legal and electoral inequalities. The Trump presidency is the logical conclusion and final destination for a party that focuses on self-interest over concern for the public good and welfare of the community, even to the point of lying, breaking laws and betrayal of other Americans.

Happy Fourth to you all. Chin up: even if you fight against Trump and lose, you are pushing back and limiting his influence. I leave you with some more quotes:

"Freedom was never given to anybody." Martin Luther King, Jr

"Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed."  MLK

“Freedom is not something that anybody can be given. Freedom is something people take, and people are as free as they want to be.”
James Baldwin

Thanks Kcar. Some very good points here. I totally agree that we get the government, media etc that we deserve. Which is saying a lot...  I also agree with your words and call to keep your chin up

Not always easy to distinguish the "good" from the pleasant or the comforting.

One question which keeps bothering me. How do we avoid the fact that those (regardless of the party) who've got what it takes to get to the top are precisely those who should perhaps not lead because the qualities they have are probably not those we should look for in leader.  Someone who would not put their personal interest ahead of principles, common good, limit compromising...

Sometimes, I think that the system we have created to deal with the problems that were identified has become so complex that it is generating its own (unsolvable without a radical change) issues that we simply cannot deal with. Like the tax system for example. I think at some point we (or the leaders?) should have the courage to say. OK, let's stop for a minute, what do we have? What do we want? How do we get there, regardless of what has been done before.

Also I'm constantly wavering between doing nothing because I'm too lazy, too selfish, too centred on my kids and also because can I be neurotic to the point that I want people's happiness despite themselves? and wanting to do something. But what? Most parties in my country are a joke, no real thinking that I can discern besides damage control or trying to keep things as they are for as long as possible. Pffff

Thanks for your uplifting thoughts :-)

How far we have come in so short a time (again) with technology.  It wasn't all that long ago when 4 GB USB thumb drives were a new thing for $30 or $40.  Jr gave me a 1 TB USB flash drive for Father's Day.  He got two of them for $20.  It is half the size of my discontinued MicroCenter 4 GB flash drive ...

and we just come to find out last week that every sound that is picked up by Alexa devices is kept forever.   The price of solid state data storage space is now so cheap and the size so small that there is no reason to delete anything, anymore, based upon physical space and hardware costs.  The impact of this on the development and implementation of AI will be monumental.

You can learn a lot from history,  people tell us all the time what they have learned so I will chime in.  The more I learn of history, the more I am thankful for where we are now.  I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July!

Happy 4th!

Forward!

I saw Jackson Browne at Wolf Trap last night. A great show; a brilliant songwriter. The song that really got to me tonight, though, was Lives in the Balance.

There are lives in the balance
There
 are people under fire

FORWARD!

I feel you.   I never expected an American president to ask:  "What would an authoritarian regime of a developing country do to celebrate nation statehood?"  And then go ahead and do it.

One tiny ray of hope:  American institutions are still relatively strong.

Along with declaration it's also the anniversary of my becoming an orphan.   Not the kind of independence I really feel like celebrating.  It's been a pretty depressing day for me for the last seventeen years.
