Ephesians 5: 3-7 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. So no. Actually we can't. We've been commanded not to.

If you don't like being called a God-hater or a cold unfeeling robot with no humility and no sense of beauty, don't tell other people they're self-deluded, immature, irrational, or complicit in genocide and other horrors.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

I didn't find your words offensive, personally. But there are others here who would. My point is this, and please understand that I make it with absolute respect and good intentions: we all want to be treated respectfully here. You yourself have often complained that you don't feel treated with respect. It's a perfectly good and legitimate need. This has been, with a few glaring exceptions, a really excellent debate and discussion. All I'm saying is that it doesn't take a ton of effort to tip it over the edge and cross that line from disagreement to derision. sometimes, a thoughtless line tossed of and then dismissed as "just a joke" is enough. You are by no means the only person who does this, but because you are personally so sensitive to being treated with disrespect, I thought the point might be especially likely to reach you. That's all. Peace everybody. Gotta get focused for the rest of the day.

All those words, and a mere two would have been so much better. People base their lives on their beliefs. They take them seriously - look how fervently you defend your liberal values. Look how upset you get when some people mock them. Discussions like this fail for lack of empathy, respect, and humility.
Also well put.

I find this incredibly offensive. You paint with a huge brush. Just looking over this thread I think you'll find plenty of evidence to the contrary. (Which, you know, is kind of funny after going on and on about salesmen and evidence.)
I think the key to having what Alain de Botton calls "harmonious disagreement" is a mutual respect. But you seem to have no respect for those who believe differently than you do. That pretty much cuts the discussion off at the knees.
Well put.

People! Lighten up! Maybe because I live in a big city, but they make jokes like this on the morning news.
