Typography in Album Artwork: From Groovy Typefaces to Handwritten Calligraphy

I saw the thread pop up again and thought of this article I read a few weeks ago about fonts and typefaces on album covers over the years.

Sort of a fan's take... Agree with Bruno Mars, the rest of her good examples are kind of meh. Overall the by-the-decades trends seem to be valid.

Yeah, whoever designed the Bruno Mars cover was making an obvious nod to Saul Bass - good job on that.  Her other favorites aren't that impressive but also the only "12"-record" period she covered is the 1970s, and that's only from 1975 forward, so she didn't really cover much of the period when designers had to cover a physically larger space with design elements and could get more "expressive" with typefaces and lettering.
*All Benguiat on that Harry Truman LP - I think Whole Foods used that typeface for a while.

That's pretty cool, nice graphics. It would be a fun project.  About 900 covers, limited to  Top 25 songs by era.  Hand-written cover lettering is not really as newly popular as she seems to suggest though - pretty much all of the "calligraphy" covers from the 1970s and most of the '80s were handwritten (or hand-lettered), granted they were done by professional calligraphers.

My girlfriend, now my wife of 44 years Friday, stopped to see what we could do.
It was a well lubricated Phil Harris. He bumped his head with just a little cut that was bleeding.
The sheriff showed up quickly and took over.
I'm sure he pegged the breath-a-lizer test.
