When I was 16, I arranged a version of this for my drumline to play as we led the marching band from out of earshot down and into the football stadium. It was 1976 and the student body went crazy over this. The faint bassline heard in the distance growing through the verse and the crescendo of the chorus, climaxing and starting over. I am told that cadence lasted 5 more years after I graduated.

Right? LEAVE RP?!...one of the best guitar players in the world and one of the most prolific bands ever.( In concert, Carlos is even better.)  Might as well tell  R.P to leave out the Stones or Prince. Ridiculous notion.

Why don't YOU leave instead!
Oct. 15, 1971...Santana at the Felt Forum in NYC, my second major rock concert following Poco at the Asbury Park Convention Hall that summer. An hour delay in the start of the early show ( the days of two shows a night)  due to the performers plane being late or so it was said. Malo opened though it had been posted that Booker T. and Priscilla would be the openers that night. Perhaps it was Booker T's plane that was delayed. Guys seated directly behind us were smoking something that smelled like burning onions. Won't ever forget that show.
nice organ.

Oh boy - another 'rpdevotee' comment indicating your level of devotion to RP is less than 100%. Scan the comments, for instance CoJo's, and you'll see that EVEN these overplayed tunes are welcomed by many, even on RP, a lot of the time.  Sure some folks want to whine about it, and that's OK too. Where I get a bit jittery is when I read the (very polite) order to stop playing something.  Unless you are on the Board of Directors....?

For me, outside of how much I like this song (I've rated it a 10 b/c of the time in my life when I first HEARD Abraxas (i.e. 25 years after it was released) I really enjoy how BillG mixes the tunes, allowing a bit of enjoyment for almost everyone who would tune in, while opening our collective ears to music we're not familiar with; in a word:  Brilliance!!  Long Live RP!!

Exactly
what i love about this song is that it is Bueno pa' gozar!  Muy bueno!

Thank You for the info!  I always  wondered about the English translation,  GREAT TUNE!!  Thanx RP!

I'm in my 50's and I've probably heard this song easily 300 times.
Just now it sounded new to me, and I'm bumping to it in my kitchen.
Maybe it's senility.
Either way, thanks RP!

The best part about RP is there are so many songs from so many genres that when i hear a classic like this i can enjoy it since i haven’t heard it in so long. And lest u think I’m new to Santana, i saw them in the late 70s. BTW Al Di Meola opened. U want guitar work, check him out.

I AGREE!  I have been listening to Al DiMeola since the 70s!!

Nah, it didn't turn into drech until the 10,302nd play which was about 1982 if memory serves me correctly.  The first 10,000 plays were okay...

So, not late to the party, just have gained the wisdom to leave with the pretty girl when she smiles at me, and not wait for my drunken idiot friends to deem themselves suitably wasted...

This song was overplayed in the 80's.  Now, 3 decades later there is no excuse to play this song any longer—especially considering Santana had so many great *underplayed* songs and also because RP should focus more on "alternative", not main stream, which this song is.
Please stop.

This entire album was incredible.  Truly a classic that hasn't aged at all as Hispanic culture is more relevant than ever.
primal rhythm song forever and yes
i hear it
Saw Tito Puente's son's band at a concert and Tito the younger thanked Carlos Santana for enabling him to attend college thanks to the royalties on this timeless gem.
Oye como va is thankfully a standard (never played too much, imho), but I need to comment on the splendid visuals RP provides: that Abraxas cover is trippy cool/weird 70's and the water color or marker portrait of Santana is right on funny, thank you!

wait, ohmygod, Spirit follows! Mmmmmmm
Pachanga loves this song!

Covered this tune in my first rock & roll band in 1972.  I played bass and sang lead, phonetically, as I didn't know a word of Spanish.  I have no idea if I was even close.

This one still rocks the house!

The stereo percussion is just, well just groovy!  {#Bananasplit}
I used to live in Albuquerque, and this song got played around 8 times a day. You could literally change stations to get away from it only to hear it on another station at the same exact time. I abstain from voting because, through no fault of Bill's, overplay has ruined it for me. That doesn't happen that often to me.

Also, there was a mayor of Albuquerque a while back named Jim Baca. Guess I know what he's doing in his retirement....

I don't care if it's been played a million times. It's a GREAT song! Woooo!
I can't believe I used to like this shit.
I liked this album when I was in high school in the latter half of the 70's. One year I arranged this tune as a drum cadence for the drumline to play as we led the band into the stadium before the football game. The whole thing took on a cool hip vibe. I found out recently that the drumline continued to play it for several years after I left and the entire student body just ate it up!

Cool music transcends!

It's not that this is a BAD song but it's one of those FM songs I feel like I've heard way too many times.
What saves it for me is the usage in the Coen's movies (it was in Big Lebowski too).

Come on Sanata... Tune it!
Still sounding so cool.
I guess there is no accounting for taste.  The Specials' "Message to You Rudy" before this was "good for my ears" , this just annoys me and I don't think I could give an adequate explanation why.

News update!

Ady Miles comes back to complain about Santana saying; "this song is one of the reasons i left RP".  But he came back to complain after he left RP. . . thus negating his leaving. Ady then fell into a weird comment feedback loop and (hopefully) self combusted.
