This song is way better than this version of it. Google 'MTV Music awards 2014 Every Breaking Wave.' That's the superior version of this song. The production of this tune feels way too blah here. Bummer.
A bass line from a recent U2 song is the musical equivalent of Subway bread smell, announcing its mediocrity to all those unfortunate enough to be within range.

I have no compassion for this song. I am SO against what U2 have become and that they now represent and how they used their 'influence' to force their music (via Apple) onto people who did not want it.
It is the thin end of the wedge.

My hunch is that a labored, mediocre album from a spent band isn't going to lead to a Maoist lockdown of the global music industry.
Apple is a relentlessly profit-driven company obsessed with its image. It depends on the goodwill of its customers. It made a big PR mistake by pushing the album to iTunes customers without prior consent. It provided a software tool to remove the album from customers' drives and iTunes account. I doubt Tim Cook and co. will be a making a similar mistake for a long time.

Well personally, I didn't like having them forcing their album on me. I would have liked it better to receive a link with the choice to download it for free or leave it where it was. That's all. The lack of choice and taking over my devices was not necessarily something smart. It was ok in a sense because it was only music, but it could have been a hate speech from some extremist group, a sermon to invite us to convert to whichever faith, some porn pictures or movie.... .... I do not think their initiative should be encouraged, no matter their good intentions, there are simply too many ways to see that perverted.
I have kept the album for a few days in my iTunes though and then I deleted it as no, their music is definitely not to my taste. I've tried to listen to the whole album but there is something in their music that doesn't talk to me. It doesn't mean that I hate them, I guess you can say I just do not understand their music ?

Not in my case. It got downloaded to my phone without any offer or request. It took me an hour to figure out how to delete it. It wasn't possible to just remove it in the same manner that I remove other music from my phone.
Offering their album free of charge would have been fine. Inflicting it on people without their consent is annoying, and making it difficult to delete is really objectionable.
There are a lot of good songs, including this one, on the new album. The best one is Iris. Would love to hear in on RP.

For a lot of people it's turning into something like Tom Cruise, where people have made up their mind based on the persona vs the product.

I keep hoping that time will be kind to U2. You know what I mean: With a little practice they could actually become a decent band. But no. Time has not been kind, and they have not improved. They remain a mediocre and pretentious band, with bland songs.
It sure is great to have a new U2 album out again, (they make great markers of big changes in Life!), and it really is quite a jammer! The lyrics in this song -- absolutely genius in a very Melville way -- describe the depths of the tidal pulls and pains I'm going through...
Have only listened to the album a few times since Tuesday but agree that it's much better than the last one. Early favorite is Iris. This one's good, too.
Rate any U2 song lower than any Iron & Wine song is a sin. Yes, I'm serious. 7.

i agree with the thought that this entire effort (album) is better than the last one or two... and upon subsequent listens, i'm enjoying it a little more. it's a bit of a paradigm shift to think 'suprise! new u2 record today'.. i also want to say it's a bit weird to hear bono scream / singing 'Raised By Wolves!', but that's another song...
This is NOT one of the better tracks from the album. Seems like one of their "obligatory" pop tunes. A bit soulless and contrived....and overall I really like the album!
