You can go wherever you wanna go
Go wherever you wanna go
Fly up to the moon and say hello now
You can go wherever you wanna go

You don't ever have to go to war no more
Never have to go to war no more
Wear them boots and swim that icy shore now
You don't ever have to go to war no more

You can get up on some sunny day and run
Run a hundred miles just for fun now
Heartaches and yesterdays don't weigh a ton now
You can get up on some sunny day and run

You don't ever have to pay the bills no more
Break a sweat or walk a worried floor now
Working like a dog ain't what you're for now
You don't ever have to pay the bills no more

You can go wherever you wanna go
You can go wherever you wanna go
Go to where the time's wound all the way down
Put a penny on the track and wait for train sounds
Tell your mama you're coming back before the sun's down
You can go wherever you wanna go

This album came out when I was caring for my Dad during his last few months on the planet.  He must have been about the same age as Patty's dad - I could identlfy so strongly with each line.  I listened to this album countless times during this amazing phase of life, and sang this song at his funeral.

GBU!
True American soul! Blessed!
Good strong voice, great band. Good song.
I love Patty, my New England sister.  Her voice lifts my spirit every time.

Available for bass, rhythm guitar, keys or harmony vocal anytime.

Not my usual type of music, but man, she still has a great voice, specially if you count her age. Crystal clear and tuned. Impressive!

I don't even know what that means. Emmylou is about twenty years older than PG, and still killin' it.

Ms. Griffin got cancer in 2016, and lost her voice for some time. So what did she do? Made another album! Self-titled, highly recommended - Bill plays stuff off it.

Neither one. It's about her father's passing. Most of the album is.

A Patty "two-fer" in my playlist
Four years later, I wonder if you still think the fears were so "trumped up"?
Love Patty, I also found her here on RP, Long Ride Home was my intro to her music. My half brother had just died tragically in a car accident at the age of 17. I still choke up whenever I hear that song.
This one is more, I don't know...hopeful? Uplifting? Still emotional.

Strikes a chord definitely.

Yes indeed. This song, and 'Goodbye', never fail to give me chills. Every. Time.

Love this. Thanks all.

It's quite easy to find out. No - it's on 1000 Kisses

Touche' owchita! Taking your advice I see that 1000 Kisses and Long Ride Home came well before, so perhaps it is a follow-up. The widower finally passing on.

Of course, I suppose I could google Patty's interview on the subject and stop all this conjecture, but hey, that wouldn't be near as interesting as getting called out on the RP comments section...
Utopian and silly, but in a good way.
Bill, you made my Monday much more bearable with this song.  I love this woman.

Ha, that's something I have said myself. She is incredible, especially live. She makes it look so easy.

I'm still dumbfounded by this woman's talent. Such an inspired musician.
No one sings about death more beautifully than Patty.

I'm sure Patty is doing quite well financially
country music done right

Was able to see Patty sing this song and hear David Pulkingham play this beautiful tune. He was amazing and a perfect match for her voice.

Her gift for song and story is something she shares with us mere mortals.

Trusting all is good.
That's enough already.

This song has helped me through the passing of my parents and my first dog. My mind just associates the lyrics with my dearly departed.

Are these songs now rotating every 2 days or so?  It seems like Radio Paradise has really pared down their playlist... I'm hearing this, Amy Winehouse's "Back To Black", The Shins "Those To Come", etc every other day now.
See her live. She will blow your mind. Or, at least elevate your consciousness.

How odd... this song just played, yet the real-time playlist in the upper right of the RP site (on a desktop/laptop) said it was Joseph Arthur, In the Sun. {#Ask} {#Sad}
I love voices like Patty's. Amazing how pure and strong a voice can be. Lucky doer.
Chills.
 It's good.

Heard this for the first time while seeing Patty a few years ago in concert. I had lost my mom about a year or so before that, and this song brought me to tears.
Sweet!
Never have to go to war no more.

I saw her in concert for the first time a couple of days ago at the Portland Zoo amphitheater and she was great!  She has a fantastic voice and a great band.  I highly recommend.

In some respects, this reminds me of Joan Baez and in a very good way. For a few seconds I thought I heard John Prine.
{#Heartkiss}  This is an amazing country song ! I love it, everything is perfect, from her voice to the music, the lyrics... Excellent !
What a great song, she really has the ability to draw me into the story she's telling and I'm left feeling emotional about people that don't really know. I've got tickets to see her at the Vogue in Vancouver next month, really looking forward to it.

I posted a similar comment on another PG song from this album, but it bears repeating, at least for me.  The first day I bought this album, I played it at the office and got very little done the rest of the day.  That night, I closed myself in my garage, grabbed a bottle of booze, pulled out a lawn chair, put this album on repeat, and listened to it over and over all night, sobbing like a baby.  It is a beautiful tribute to her father who recently passed away, and it was a reminder that I will someday (hopefully not too soon) also have to face missing my dad.

I thought from the intro that this was a Grateful Dead track I had never heard.

OK Bill you started it. Nothing but fantastic female singers for the next hour. Joan Osborne, Patty Griffin, Emmylou next?
FWIW, I just love this song, especially the sentiments... {#Cheers}
Such a beautiful voice...
Really need to buy this album. Sounds great.

I think her father passed away in 2009, but no matter, you are spot on about the emotional impact. Her music has been ripping my heartstrings for years.

This come out just in time for my Grampa's passing. Such a sweet song.

This was excellent in concert.
I turned it up to listen and didn't do it for me like older PG.  Oh well.
Wow.  This song is heart-crushing.  I miss my Dad so much.  And my Mom.  And both of my brothers...

A quick search revealed many of the tracks on this album are about her father, who passed away in 2009. Poignant indeed.

Just saw her last month at Haw River Ballroom here in NC - what a transcendent show. Thanks Patty and thanks RP!~{#Heartkiss}

I got to see her last Tuesday, what a great show.
