I am a poor wayfaring stranger
While traveling through this world of woe
Yet there's no sickness, toil or danger
in that bright world to which I go.

I'm going there to see my father
I'm going there no more to roam
I'm only goin' over Jordan
I'm only goin' over home.

--- Instrumental ---

I know dark clouds were headin' around me
I know my way is tough and steep
Yet beautious fields lie just before me
Where God's redeemed their vigils keep.

I'm going there to see my mother
She said she'd meet me when I come
I'm only goin' over Jordan
I'm only goin' over home...

and ricky skaggs on mandolin
I’ve had a crush on Emmylou since high school and these many yrs later - still do.
please consider making album cover part of your image  carousel

especially this album cover
She is an entire genre.

IS THIS REAL LIFE!?!?!
EH is an American treasure. This is a solid 8. To think done 43 years ago.
Ricky Skaggs on mandolin?

Classic bkuegrass song
I hear this song I immediately think of H.P. Lovecraft.
Emmylou what a great treasure

Warning: superficial comment follows... I only remember her as a blonde. IMHO, she looks much better as pictured.....

Emmylou has been many things in her lifetime, but a blonde is not one of them. She's had beautiful silver-gray hair for the last couple of decades. Perhaps that's what you're thinking of.
One of my buddies once opened up for he with Boyd Calvin Tinsleyr.  He said that she was very kind in praise of their work.

Temporal loop.

Just what I needed this morning.

I've never seen a pic of her w/blonde hair. Maybe you've mistaken a gray-haired image of her?
I've listened to many versions of this song but this one sends me to the moon and back every single time I hear it. So beautiful.
Mercy. No one can do a funeral dirge better'n Emmylou. Need me hankie.

the one from 16 Horsepower is also my favorite ! But this cover was a good surprise, it's not as genuine but it is still pleasant to listen to, a good 7 from me :)

Love this version, but I am a huge fan of 16HP's effort, it has a completely different feel to it. EH's has a chorus of men & women walking through a chest-high field of wheat, clad in white (like O Brother Where Art Thou) imagery, whereas Sixteen Horsepower's is more of a dark & brooding, evangelical-preacher-on-a-wagon-bench-picking-on-a-banjo kind of feeling.

She's so damn gorgeous.

I don't like Country.  Gave this an 8 though.  What a song.

I wouldn't call Wayfaring Stranger a country song in the general sense of the genre. I would put it in the american traditional category or maybe  a bit of gospel. This a a great album.

If I die would someone please make arrangements for her to sing at my funeral..............Love me some Emmylou
just watched Emmylou on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert where she slowly sang "I am just a Pilgrim on this Road" and was brought to tears by that message, having recently lost my dear mom and dad ... damn girl you are truly an angel
{#Music} bought this record when it first came out and this song still stands out as one of the best versions ive heard !

This is amazing…a run of at least eight songs that I rated 8 (meaning I'd like to hear ones like them way more often than not—not necessarily that I think they're great songs, although most of them are).

You rate songs an 8 that you don't consider great? I mean, I guess we all have different calibrations, but 8 seems so ding dang high. . .then again I'm pretty stingy with my 8s, 9s, and 10s. . .
Angelic and superlative.

For her whole career, she has attracted very talented people to play with her.. Goes back to her days with Gram P. That's a long time ago. Geez.
Ahhh...
Great tune!!! {#Music}{#Cheers}
Beautiful! {#Cheers}{#Sunny}
Best version EVER.

Simply the "who's who" of the Who's Who Book.
I never heard of Sweet Emmylou before seeing Scorcese's "Last Waltz" and that gorgeous woman pounded a strong spike in my heart, and her sound was an awakening

This is quite nice and there are some really good bluegrass chops.

Please play more of this and maybe play some more blue grass.
And they say  RP never plays country.  Well, it does, but only the very best.
my first Emmylou record and still my favorite

But I think Wayfaring stranger wins it when you look to covers by well known artists.
My favourite one must be the cover from 16 Horsepower. It sounds the most genuine and the singer believes what he sings. Im missing that piece of emotion here.

Of course, Emmylou Harris is wonderful, the song is a classic, and the roster is impressive … but this version seems oddly upbeat.
Fine Song thanks Emmylou for your vocals

Lots of versions of this classic abound.  For a classical, formal treatment, try Andreas Scholl's rendition.
Yes, Emmylou had to make do with whomever was around the studio that day {#Lol}.  Her rendition is excellent.

very painful to listen to this so early in the morning !
But seriously... a great version, not quite up to the God-like genius of JC, but a very fine attempt!

Ah, but would she, Poach? There's only a very small percentage of humans, male or female, who maintain their beauty into old age. Emmylou is one of them plainly, from your stunning photo, as are Helen Mirren, Amanda Redman and Robert Redford, but I suspect that you and I don't fall into that 1%, more's the pity... :(

Speak for yourself Fred, the Bath air and thermal waters have a bracing effect on both young and old!

Interesting to see that this song originally wrote in the 1800s... truly a song that transcends... somebody tell Jack White and Emmylou to team up for a duet on this one... that may be too much to ask for.
Solo and other licks by Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs are sublime.
Lovely song.

Heard it first in a pub back room in Chichester last year performed by Wild Willy Barrett's (remember him with John Ottway) French Connection as part of an eclectic set.  Can be found on you tube.
