On my way back home, by chance I thought of
All my favorite songs, where I'd gone wrong
The only words that I could think of
I'm pissing my life away in the form of a song
On my way back home

Every step, a victory it was
I was cheating death, just in time I woke
My memories start to wander off
Come to me, the remembrance of
On my way back home

I came in this way and here now I'll stay
If the unknown have to wait one more day
There's often times that it comes out wrong
But luckily I, I got a mind to know
On my way back home

How about a separate platform for people to show off their wannabe musicology creds. We could call it 'Radio Hell'
Great, talented, clever group; loved 'em since their first release, and I absolutely love the cover pic on this record. Reminds me of starry nights in the thrall of the mighty Kaweahs, after climbing high all day...
i feel like every single song of theirs sounds the same. i'm happy to PSD this one.
really beautiful

I was thinking Wayne Coyne was providing vocals
Funny I hear that "Cups" pop-tart tune from that singing movie with that girl-next-door brunette... sorry I'm bad with names...
We just saw them at Gasparilla Music Festival in Tampa. Great show.

Ooh yeah, I'm getting a heap of Sloop John B from this. Thought it might have been an attempted cover, it was so obvious.

Going from The Kruger Brothers to Band of Horses, but staying in NC. See what you did there, Billbecca ;)
So hoist up the John B. Sails...

Most of us noticed it, and some of us have already commented on it.

I bumped up my rating... and am wondering why I only gave it a 6 before...
Love this album. It was one of my anchors that year.
Not sure where you folks get the Sloop John B thing as a comparison to this.

Wistful tone underscored with some happy banjo. Like it!

Really like that visual... now I feel like I have a memory of being there.

Yup. That's one reason I love RP.

I'm only at a 7 on this one although I'll mentally bump it to a 7.4 now that I have the interesting hypothetical to go with it.  Long Live RP!!

Great idea. I think in that parallel universe Neil has a little more vocal talent. These guys have a great sound and keep me listening around for new bands.
I did laugh out loud at your Neil Young comment - good one.  And Good Song!!!

I spent 10 minutes trying to suss this out without looiking it up.

Th B side was indeed another great tune written from the point of view of a kid with a lack of self-confidence.

"Your So Good to Me" how come you are....
This is one of their less offensive to the ears tracks, which at least bumps it up to a marginal.

Yep. Ripoff of The Beach Boys.

As noted below, numerous times, The Beach Boys version is a cover of a Caribbean folk song which was written before the 1920s.  The Kingston Trio recorded a version in the 1950s.  Were these guys influenced by The Beach Boys?  It's very likely, but it's a traditional chord progression and the original song is about 100 years old.

I guess the next song will be one of the Beach Boys just to do them right.

Not many songs are unlike any others and this is quite nice in its own right (not damning by faint praise) quite nice.

A lovely melody that evokes a lot of pleasant images and emotions. One of my favorite RP songs. Unlike some other, good tunes, I might not ever get tired of this one.

Thanks for that.  It often seems that many of the "music critics" who post in these threads apparently fail to acknowledge that any music even existed before the 1960s.  There is a strange delusion that everything musical can only be traced back as far as Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Doors, Pink Floyd, etc., and that traditional chord progressions, which have existed for centuries, were miraculously "invented" less than 50 years ago.  If the only tool one has is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
{#Music}so love this song, so love Band of Horses!

Sloop John B is probably an old Jamaican song.

Yes, its totally Sloop John B. And that is what makes this song so great. It's an update, a remix... oh those blessed days.. and now, so new again. If I had never heard of the Beach Boys, I would sit crossed legged on the floor, in awe. As it is, I fell down, and thought I'd just sit down here for a bit while this played. My butt hurts.

That Beach Boysong is almost 50 years old. Don't think it has perpetual rights to a certain rhythm and sound. And it probably borrowed from an even older song itself.
