I am better with my muscles
than I am with my mouth
I work the fair grounds in the summer
or go pick fruit down south
And when I feel them chilly winds
where the weather goes I'll follow
Pack up my travelling things
go with the swallows
And I might get Lucky now and then - you win some
I might get lucky now and then - you win some

I wake up every morning
keep an eye on what I spend
Got to think about eating
got to think about paying the rent
I always think it's funny -
it gets me every time
And what about happiness for money -
tell it to the breadline
But you might get Lucky now and then - you win some
You might get Lucky now and then - yeah, you win some

Now I'm a rambling through this meadow
happy as a man can be
Think I'll just lay me down
under this old tree
On and on we go
through this old world a shuffling
If you've got a truffle dog
you can go truffling
And you might get Lucky now and then - you win some
You might get Lucky now and then - yeah, you win some

I think you may mean "consummate", not "commensurate".

I will always love Knopfler. When I saw him live he was a great example of humility. In between songs he promoted his musicians in the band.
My own music was influenced in the sense that he taught me what it looks like to have air in a song.  Slow down a little and let the gaps be filled with that which we can hardly explain.

I've no clue when it comes to technical stuff on guitar playing, but a mate of mine who is quite knowledgeable called what you are describing as "spacing". He would say things like, "you've got to love the spacing in Knopfler".

Never heard it, rate it a 9 , love the message. For me, the message can be more important than anything else.

Hey, mike, you got that right!

Hahaha!  That's my favorite line in this song — in fact I have a hard time remembering the real title.  Always just call it "the truffle dog song".
Lovely tune. Knopler plays and writes from the heart

lovely album
This is beautiful, and the wine isn't a bad idea either...

Anybody out there thinks that Mark Knopfler has been listening to Greg Brown?

Every time I hear this song, my spirits rise ever so slightly. Time to give this a 6.
Mark, please don't get stuck in country music...
I wants me a truffle dog. Met a truffle pig once, but that doesn't really count.

Listening to him ruminate about life, age, people he sees and some he knows is always interesting... Shared experiences and memories bind us all... Beats always hearing songs about love... Nice to hear this...Thanks

I was just thinking this. It's a really nice song with no angst, just a nice story. I miss the likes of Harry Chapin who could really tell stories. It's nice that there are some artists out there still telling stories.
I love this song.  There are a handful of songs by Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits that are absolutely beautiful - and the rest
are just OK.  That said, I could listen to the guy play his guitar all day.

He's skilled, he's a good singer, he makes good choices about what to sing.  And he bores me almost to tears.   *sigh*  Pardon me.

went straight to nine for me - he gets better and better with age like a good cheese or schnitzel

Right back atcha, robh... {#Cheers} In light of events of the past few days, I'm bumping this song from 9 to 10. And some poor slob out there can live another day as a result. {#Roflol}

THIS IS ONE OF THOSE TUNES I JUST NEED TO SHUT OFF. 2

Beginning is very similar to Jorma Kaukoen "I Am The Light Of The World" on the Quah album.
Always makes me look

The thing I really like about Knopfler is as he ages he seems to embrace his Scottish heritage even more, putting his magical touch on the traditional folksongs. I can't wait for his new album.

Yeah, seriously, Knopfler/Dire Straits every single day... ain't it great?!?!?! Oh wait, you were complaining... WTF? Come on, there's tons of radio stations out there that go months and years without any Knopfler/Dire Straits at all. Bill's just trying to provide equal time!  :-)

Seriously!

Funny, I feel the same way about Tori Amos. But, I respect her genius, however it comes out and whatever she is willing to share. We can't expect 2 decades of tortured melody and lyrics, but I know what you mean!
Please, someone put this guy out of his misery.

A truffle dog sir knight and its a'going trufflin'... {#Mrgreen}

Rag Pickers Dream is another great Knofler CD.
Hm, Colin Hay might have a better grasp of this genre. "If you've got a truffle dog, you might go trufflin'"?
I'd definitely recommend this CD - very thoughtful, at times wistful, every track telling a story, and not a duff track to be heard. There's  considerable Scottish influence on the music, such as the uillean pipes on this song, and some of the songs are about Scottish themes, such as the decline of shipbuilding on the Clyde. 7 from the Albaphile Nottingham jury for this song, a 9 for the CD.

{#Hearteyes}
And he's so terrific in concert....{#Guitarist}
Aaaahhhhhhhhh, this is great! What a storyteller, i'm so glad he keeps on doing what he wants to do...

And you gotta love the flute-solo... Very surprising!

great four songs in a row right there. enjoyed it.
MK: Songs written by a man comfortable in his own skin. Wonderful artistic expression.

Heard the opening notes and was SURE that it was John Prine's "Hello in There"

Like the sound of this.

Still owes John a nod for the opening though...

Has Mr. Knopfler ever recorded anything less than really good?

Uh, as a big MK fan.... YES!

Money For Nothing (i mean the song, not the LP), Twisting By The Pool, Extended Dance Play (EP).... There are some really terrible songs out there he wrote, but then, those songs are from a period he sort of got sucked into the huge 80's thing.... Glad he got out of that and went back to doing his own thing.....
...like this one....

A nice and easy song, perfectly placed on the same-titled album...

Perfect for my day. The sun's shining, I have three days off, the house to myself, and a vodka and tonic. It doesn't get much better than this...{#Sunny}
never liked dire Straits or Knopfler but now it's a nice add to the mix on RP. Thank you. Deftly done as always.

On first listen a 7.  Since I am so biased to liking whatever this guy does I need to hear this more to bump it up some.  I expect that will happen.
I like this and look forward to future 'visits'.
