The Monkees were a commerially invented  band intended to provide the USA's version of The Beatles and compete with them. They failed of course.

The versatility and creativity of these guys is mind blowing even if some of their songs aren’t so much. As prolific as they were you’d expect normal distribution of song sayings from “blah” to “OMG!”

When I was a kid my grandmother would take me to the movies in Elizabeth NJ and it was something else to experience all the teen-aged girls in the theater screaming and crying to the guys up on the screen during A Hard Days Night in 1964 and Help! in 1965 as if they were actually present.
Fast forward to May 9, 2002 seeing McCartney in concert in Dallas and the young guy behind me screaming at McCartney to play Wings songs which he had come to hear because he, the screamer, wasn't familiar with any Beatles tunes. I suppose from his perspective the Beatles were just some guys comprising McCartney's first backup band before he finally made it big with Wings.

SO nice to hear! I include this on the list of fantastic lesser-known songs by The Beatles (relatively speaking, of course!) Without thinking about it too much, I'd definitely put "If I Needed Someone" (Rubber Soul) and "Rain" (single or B-side or something) on the list.

I've heard several bluegrass acts do this number - it works well.  I believe that was what Paul McCartney was going for when he composed it.  A lovely song.

...or even 40 years afterwards, even with the skiffle influence. I honestly didn't suss this as the Beatles. They were certainly ahead of their time in the 60s. Still not my fave band by any stretch, but kudos to them for their innovation and invention.
