Magnificent
Oh, oh, magnificent

I was born, I was born to be with you
In this space and time
After that and ever after
I haven't had a clue
Only to break rhyme
This foolishness can leave a heart black and blue, oh, oh

Only love, only love can leave such a mark
But only love, only love can heal such a scar

I was born, I was born to sing for you
I didn't have a choice but to lift you up
And sing whatever song you wanted me to
I give you back my voice from the womb
My first cry, it was a joyful noise, oh, oh

Only love, only love can leave such a mark
But only love, only love can heal such a scar

Justified till we die, you and I will magnify, oh, oh
Magnificent, magnificent, oh

Only love, only love can leave such a mark
But only love, only love unites our hearts

Justified till we die, you and I will magnify, oh, oh
Magnificent, magnificent, magnificent

I just don’t get, and never have gotten U2
Rockin' !!!!!!!!!!!
Actually to follow up on my previous comment... as I try to age gracefully it is the only song that can get me up on the dance floor.
I don't know of any other contemporary band that shoots for the stars like U2 does. They may not all be hits, but very rarely are they misses.
Bono struggling to sing, his voice is falling apart.

It is Magnificent - I must bump my previous 9 > 10.

One of the few songs I feel compelled to whirl like a Dervish.

To me 8 - Most Excellent  TY U2 and RP
I think you mean "Marvelous", darling.

If it's any solace, it's easier for bands to find audiences nowadays than it was thirty or forty years ago.  I think a lot of people look beyond the megastars anyhow.
I can't stand U2 , overdose....
Not bad...since All That You Cant Leave Behind, the band seems to have about 1 albums worth of decent material (taken/compiled from each of the subsequent albums).

U2 started as a small indie band with something meaningful to say. To my ears they are now a huge band with something meaningful to say.
"My first cry . . . it was a joyful noise."  Indeed!
A solid rocker with a great driving beat; played it on the drive to from Boise to Ketchum/ Sun Valley for a month of skiing in March of '09
I've been trying hard for years to like U2, but after due and careful consideration, I believe their output is overblown, self-indulgent, pretentious rubbish.
Usual awful crap.
This was a really good album overall - I like it much more than the latest.  This tune not so much, but decent.

Condescend much?  Personally, I really feel bad for hipsters and their daily struggle to survive in our culture.  U2 never held a single small indie band back (whatever the heck a "small indie band" is).  Everyone is capable of finding their own music considering that today's culture offers so many varied choices.

Some find it here, but beware, Bill likes U2 as do many of us listening.  I guess we all just love music that has nothing meaningful to say.

Yes Bill likes U2 - he has impeccable taste in contemporary music! U2 also reign supreme with many of us in their native homeland of the Emerald Isle and for what it is worth this song is one of my favourites :)

It is the nature of things.....    The pop music industry is a 'winner takes all' kind of game.  Just like professional sports.

As for the tastes of consumers....  it is what it is.

Fortunately for lovers of contemporary music, niche performers such as King Crimson,  Bjork, Tom Waits, Sui Generis (Argentina), Serge Fiori (Quebec) and many, many others do reasonably well and provide a variety of music to listeners that is unparalleled in human history.
I hear the vibe today in RP in response to a week of Racial Violence in America.

But it's better now.
Less megastars + many more genres and bands.
It's more level'd out.
Were I live, indie bands are flourishing live.

But yeah, radio wise is an other thing.. well you can find stations that don't highlight megastars

Saw U2 in Nashville a few weeks ago.  Amazing show.  They sounded great and put on an outstanding show.  The sound system was so impressive - for an outdoor concert it was incredible loud and no distortion.  The stage was also very impressive.  I think the 360 degrees tour is over now, but if not, and you have the chance to see them, do it, you won't regret it.

Note, at the end of the show, Bono brought up a blind fan from the audience who was holding a sing reading "blind guitar player", Bono gave him his guitar and he played All I Want Is You while Bono sang.  The rest of the band came back on stage and backed him up.  Then when the song was finished, Bono told him to keep the guitar. What a great way to end the concert.

So let's not rewrite history. The band hit a real creative and popular nadir with Joshua/Achtung but they didn't have any radio hits before that. They were and always have been a band that wrote music meant to be performed live first a formost. I think that's why so many people have a hard time accepting songs heard on the radio for the first time, these songs are meant to be heard in an arena surrounded by screaming fans, and sitting in 200$ seats.

I don't know, I have just about every U2 album and have been listening to them since the beginning.  Loved the Boy, October, War albums and although No line is no where near the quality of these albums, it is much closer in sound than anything they had put out for a long time.  Never going to get that creativity they had when they that age again anyway, so I will take what I can get...its not a bad song or album.

And having been a fan of the band from the beginning and first seeing them at the Orpheum in Boston in 1983 and several times since, I'm glad they're back.

I'll pass on this collection, the previous one, and the stadium tour. It just isn't happening, I love the Edge but this is far from passion and depth of the Joshua Tree which is this bands best effort.
The cover is a Sugimoto´s photo. Great photographer.

I have come to the same conclusion about success - is it that they loose their inspiration, loose touch with relevant subject matter, become bored or just become unwilling to take a chance with something new?

I suppose having a record company breathing down your necks for another smash CD can't help.

To me, this tune really sounds like it was written and engineered by a committee, based on previous winning formulas.

Joshua Tree. . .that was great.

4 - Acceptable - no more, no less.

Love the music and particularly the guitar riff in the chorus. The lyrics don't do anything for me though. Is it just me or is the word 'magnificent' not very rock'n'roll? Splendid, super and simply marvellous....

No, it hasn't. Except the opening track, maybe. But I don't think they have run out of new ideas. They are trying to remain the main rock'n'roll group in a world that's changed. And it's not easy, if you think that no band in history managed to be relevant for more than ten years, and that U2 are in the big game since 1980.

Very well crafted pop, and love song. Consummate U2. Very familiar. Not that there's anything wrong with that (there isn't). Incidentally, I must be asleep at the wheel. What is this fine little Web-based word processed package these guys are using here?

"Yep!"
Guitar riffs sound just like Coldplay.

Love Bono's voice in this one.

Just got the album, but Breathe is my favorite.

and Moment of Submission.

I had never been a U2 fan before (I always respected their place in music history, but never went out of my way to listen to them), but this album is terrific, and this song in particular blows me away.  It drips of Eno's production and style, which is probably why I like it so much.  Can't stop listening to this song.
I wonder how there is somedody does not like U2 , I am hearing them since 80's and probably is the only band of that period that still does not sound boring and monotonous .  This song I think is the best of this album , a new classic , 10 for me .  {#Notworthy} . They will debut with their new show in Barcelona , 30th June , in the best Football stadium of the world , where plays the best football team of the world , FC BARCELONA , VISCA EL BARÇA  , VISCA U2  i VISCA CATALUNYA.   GawgaBoy wrote:

Immediately better than the other tracks I've heard from the album so far.

Yeh this one does sound better with repeated listenings!
I love the way the guitar sounds like Bono and vice versa.
Hmmm, I'm liking what I'm hearing so far on this new album.  I have not been excited whatsoever by the last three, so I wonder if this will be different...

That great guitar riff just stays in your head! Great stuff, already in love.

Whoa nelly! When this song came on, I was thinking "wonder if this is a song from War?" And to my astonishment it is completely new! Seems the band is truly going back to the roots, MacPhisto and his ironic grin could not be more far away. And I like it.

I think the "Ho Hum" rating was created with the whole of this new U2 album in mind...
Maybe U2 should just stop making recordings so that Bono has time to visit the Pope, Obama, or do some othewise good deeds for this planet. Magnificent is a mere wasted of bandwith.
Probably best song off the album I've heard so far...
