All my life I've been poor boy son, scratching for my meat
I have been kicked in my teeth till the blood run hot and sweet
Seen a lot of living my friends and this I will repeat
Just because you knock a man down don't mean that you got him beat

It's a shame, shame, shame
Baby, it's a crying shame
It's a shame, shame, shame
Baby, it's a crying shame

Henry nearly killed me 'fore they hauled his ass in jail
Slapped me right across my face with a flour sack full o' nails
Nearly broke my head in two with his steel toed boots
Shoving all that money down the laundry chute

Listen, it's a shame, shame, shame
Baby, it's a crying shame
It's a shame, shame, shame
A crying shame

Sweet little Mary Anne with her make up all a mess
Picks herself up off the floor coughs and straightens her dress
Saying please, please daddy, can I have just a little bit more?
I said sorry baby, but I'm heading out
Somehow this town don't feel like home anymore

It's a shame, shame, shame
Baby, it's a crying shame
It's a shame, shame, shame
Baby, it's a crying shame

It's a shame, shame, shame
Baby, it's a crying shame
It's a shame, shame, shame
Baby, it's a crying shame

I've seen a lot of living my friend this I will repeat
Just because you knock a man down don't mean that you got him beat

It's a shame, shame, shame
Baby, it's a crying shame
It's a shame, shame, shame
Baby, it's a crying shame

Shame, shame, shame
It's a shame, shame, shame

Is the shame crying or is the singer crying? It's not clear.

Great song, driving forward, cool stereo mix, easy 8 from yo boy out here PEACE

Countyman was referencing a quote of Donald Sutherland's character in "Kelly's Heroes", not knocking anyone.

Uhm, not that I keep my nose squeaky clean in this regard, but you're the one with the negative waves here pal. I dunno what it is that some of you think that the RP comment section is some kinda safe-space from the world where it's all unicorns, rainbows and hippies with carnation flowers in their buttholes, where nobody says anything unkind ever. Wrong place - you're looking for the dispensary down the street.

LMMFAO... yes he does! Bless Donald Sutherland and Ray LaMontagne!

Ray looks like Donald Sutherland in the Kelly's Heroes days on this album cover.
Rythmically it's a train song without the train.

When I look I see Donald Sutherland in Kelly's Heroes....  "Makin with those Negative Waves"
 One of my favourite movies!

Blew my mind when I saw him live in a small venue mere feet away from him. This is more upbeat, but he brought me to tears multiple times during ballads. His writing is amazing.
Cool... Reminds me of Ian Siegal

Ray was born under a a bad sign - https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/ray-lamontagne-born-under-a-bad-sign-8724065.html - which perhaps is why this song resonates.
Usually I'm not too fond of Ray, but his style fits this song.
and into Get Back, nice follow up
For some reason I kept wanting to hear "Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona"

Ray LaMontagne has pretty good lyrics, I would say they seem to speak to a youngish crowd in general.

When I heard this, I looked and had rated it a 4 whenever. WTF was I thinking!? It's an easy 8 and maybe more, depending how it ages.

good for you
When I hear this song, I think..."The Guess Who meets Aretha Franklin. "

The harp licks fit just right and Ray is a rockin'!  Got an 8 right out of the box the first time I heard it.

fit title: "it´s a shame"  - awful!
oooh yeah!  GREAT segue from Chris Isaak's Round & Round

NOT a bad comparison!  I rather love Rachael Yamagata's work. I know I've mentioned this in other threads, but I have her double-CD "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" and I absolutely love the way she rocks ("Sidedish Friend" and "Accident" always make me drive too fast.)

...sounds like rachael yamagata...  ;)
This{#Bananajam} boy's puttin' it OUT.
!Nice
Love this one!  Keep it up Ray — putting out some great tunes
I am really enjoying this.  I do believe I like this Ray LaMontagne! {#Dancingbanana}

JEEEEZ Bill! wadda mix! PUSS!

Goddamn! I love this man's voice

Get back Loretta !
I typically like upbeat live music concerts.  I didn't go see him play in San Antonio because I thought it would be to mellow/slow.  A friend of mine said 'he really rocked and was very upbeat.'  Go figure.  He has a few songs that I think are really really good toe tappers - this being on of them.

Oddball:
The Man, the myth, the legend.

I see this title and all I can think of is it should be followed by Pink Floyd's "Careful with that axe, Eugene".
he can play so many kinds of music I love.  I love Ray.  It sounds sooo good.
Anyone see the commercial with Ray LaMontagne's song and the doggy. It's so cute!

Yeah - we need some Social Distortion to liven things up! Seriously Ring of Fire would go well now.

His voice gets more annoying to me the more I hear it.  This song less so.  At first I liked him, then the more I listen the more I think that he should be awake a few hours before he heads over to the studio.

I saw this guy this summer.  He's good live!

I must have seen another Ray LaMontagne, it was in January 2007 ago in Newcastle (UK) and he looked really depressed, the show was so soporific that the Geordie croud had to tell him to cheer up and crack jokes. "supporting" artist was Leona Naess which I love to listen to, unfortunately she was as depressing as Ray, I felt sorry for them. Because I really like Leona I went to see her live the next year and it was horrible, I will keep listening to her but certainly not live again.

I think you're right.
I like this and I've liked many of his songs at first. I bought one of his CD's and listened to it once, then put it away. Maybe there is not enough vocal variation for a whole CD's worth of music.
IMHO.

Some one give me a shot of whiskey.

When I jam at work  EVERYONE jams at work.
This one has really grown on me!  No other Ray LaMontagne has ever jumped out at me, despite his frequent airplay.
Jojo was a man whose voice was broke and raspy ... an "8"

If a song begs you to crank it up and enjoy, then it's a good song.  turn it up.
Those weird grunts sound like a panting pug-nosed dog. Good song, though.
It's hard to imagine that pic of a gentle hippie on the album cover has THIS voice?!
Kind of a Joe Cocker grunge

didn't i just comment on this a day or so ago?
I still love it....

I can't get enough of this performer. The one thing I love about Ray is he brings the Emotional Ride back to folk....and this song is so unique in itself compared to his more melancholy style that I am used to......
however, spread it out a bit more eh? RP has the best variety, overplaying one artist can oversaturate our sensitive listener ears
:)
